About this piece
"Fresh Aria"
A dictionary would define
opera as a form of theatrical presentation in which a dramatic
performance is set to music. For
several decades in the post war era, the first introduction to the
grandeur of opera came from Saturday afternoon radio broadcasts from the
Metropolitan Opera in New York City, sponsored by Texaco and featuring
the mellifluous voice of opera aficionado Milton Cross.
After being a bit elitist during its first 400 years, opera was
suddenly available to all.
The Portland Opera – Fresh Aria entry uses the newly energized
mysteries of 3D illusions, in specific, the “Chromadepth” 3D. Images are used to encourage prospective donors to look
anew at a home-town treasure.
In the rarified world of
opera excellence the orchestral leader holds a crucial baton, not only
directing the orchestra, but much of the stage performance relies on the
skill of the leader in weaving a compelling musical drama.
This piece is illustrative of that concept when applied to the
Graphic Arts – the folks at Anderson McConaughy design are virtuosos in
their field, but they further relied upon the printing wizards at
Dynagraphics in Portland to make this piece come to fruition.
It is said an aria is a
main theme melody, often conveying the ardor of love.
The judges loved this piece and gave it their loud applause in
naming it the International Gallery Best of Show for 2001.
