About this piece
"ABC of Colours 2001 Calendar"
Perhaps the most enduring accomplishment of Roman emperor
Julius Ceasar was the adoption of the Julian Calendar which went into
effect on January 1,45 B.C. With
few revisions it remains in universal use to this day.
It is ironic then, that while people the world over can agree upon
what day it is, there is rarely universal agreement about colour
reproduction. The hue of
orange or red used to signify a tomato being marketed in Fresno,
California may be far different from the colour used in Dusseldorf
Germany.
The winner of the inaugural Komori America Corporation Best
Calendar Award used the vehicle of the calendar to celebrate the
diversity of colour the world over.
Leading international ink manufacturer Hostmann-Steinberg produced
the winning entry. The
production notes read as follows:
“ABC OF COLOURS 2001 is the
theme conceived for this calendar. On
the individual monthly sheets, colour terms such as colour chart, play of
colours, etc., have been converted in a colourful and humorous way into
pictures by our photographer, Hartwig Klapper, Berlin.
The prints were produced in 5-6 colours and finished with
Acrylac high gloss varnish. The
ink series used was Reflecta-eco 8510.
The entire run was printed at Druckerei Grutter, Hemmingen,
Germany, who carried out lithography and printing in an excellent way.”
The winning
calendar unites the powerful themes of a universally recognized daytimer
with a riotous display of colourful imagery, cementing the fact that the
International Gallery is a truly global celebration.
We salute Hostmann-Steinberg for winning the Komori America
Corporation Best Calendar Award.
