About this piece
"The 8 Foundation Brochure"
The winner of the GTI
Graphic Technology Best Non Profit Promotion award, was produced by Key
Lithograph in Portland, Oregon for the 8 Foundation, a non profit
organization begun by Antoine Walker.
The simple emotional impact of black and white photography is
supplemented by remarkably thought provoking prose:
“ I am the Ghetto.
I am the South Side.
I was born on the South
Side of Chicago. This is
where I grew up.
I have exceeded all
statistical averages for an inner-city black male in all aspects of my
life.
I’ve survived the
streets, drugs and gangs.
I graduated from high
school and attended college.
I’ve never been to
jail. I have outlived many
of my peers.
I play professional
basketball in the National Basketball Association for the most
accomplished team in the history of the game.
When you look at me,
remember who I am.
I am the South Side.
Don’t see me for my
celebrity. Don’t see me
for my wealth.
See in me the potential
of the South Side
And every neighborhood
like it.”
We
applaud Mr. Walker and the craftspeople at Key Lithograph who helped give
voice to his moving appeal. This
entry was a unanimous choice as the winner of the first GTI Graphic
Technology best Non Profit Promotion Award.
