production of
"Blasted Church, 2002 Optima Wine Label"
Using abstract design and vivid colour the winner of the inaugural INX International Best Flexographic Label Award commemorates an actual event which took place in the Okanagan Falls area of British Columbia. Home of wineries and vast agricultural climate, known in the northern area for the highest peak of the Canadian Rockies and in the Southern region as Canada's only desert, the vast history lends itself to many uses. Including wine labels.
The story of the Blasted Church found on the website of the same name explains,
"On a cool spring morning in 1929, a small crew from Okanagan Falls set off to a deserted mining camp some 16 miles away from home. Their mission: to dismantle an old wooden church and bring it back to Okanagan Falls. The plan called for a controlled blast of four dynamite sticks inside the church in order to 'loosen the nails'. Save for losing the steeple, the plan succeeded. Now, the 103 year old wooden church stands proudly in its second home of Okanagan Falls.
In naming our VQA wines "Blasted Church", we celebrate the ingenuity of this initiative, and honour these pioneers for their vision, steadfastness and craftsmanship."
The Blasted Church 2002 Optima wine label uses an overall matte varnish and is one label in an entire series depicting the relocation of a cherished church edifice.
