IAPHC Convention in Seattle a Wonderful Event!
The 78th IAPHC Convention wound up in Seattle on Tuesday evening August 12th in gala fashion. This was the best attended Convention in recent years, and unveiled a new I CAN spirit on the part of the delegates. Among the Convention highlights:
Larry Nelson of the San Francisco and Diablo Clubs, Jeanann Georgianna of the Syracuse Club, Tony Sarubbi of the Milwaukee/Racine and North Jersey Clubs were elected to the respective posts of IAPHC Chairman, Vice-Chair and Secretary-Treasurer.
A deeply moved and richly deserving Mike Stinnett of the Detroit Club was presented the 1997 International Craftsmen of the Year award, the highest honor in Craftsmanship.
A Short Term Membership Drive was announced: The Drive winds up on November 15th. Any Craftsmen member who recruits 10 new members (located anywhere in the world) before 15 November 1997 will win a round trip airfare to Las Vegas for the IAPHC Mid Year Meeting in February, 1998.
A new form of IAPHC Membership was created by past IAPHC President Don Davidson working with Secretary Treasurer Tony Sarubbi. The new membership, called the Platinum Club, is available to any Craftsmen member, Club or District. Individual Platinum memberships go for $100 and Clubs or Districts can pledge additional sums. The North Jersey Club pledged $500 annually. The North Shore Club pledged $1,000. More than $7,000 of Platinum memberships were begun while the IAPHC delegates were in Convention assembled!
Marjorie Swiatek was presented with the Governor of the Year award. Marjie forcefully and passionately represents the 11th District. Marjie refers often to her fantastic members as Team Eleven. This message of togetherness was further supported when the 11th District assisted the Seattle Club in presenting an open to all Craftsmen social hour prior to the final banquet in honor of fellow 11th District member, new Association Chairman Larry Nelson.
In Membership Recruiting, 1996-1997 IAPHC Chairman Chris Kerlick took top individual honors; the 11th District recorded the largest membership gain as a District; and the Montreal, Columbus and Utica District Clubs took top awards in their respective classes.
Gary Walton of the Cincinnati Club won the Van Hanswyk Jasser Award for his many contributions to the cause of Industry/Education. The other nominees for this award were also stalwart contributors to advancing graphic arts industry education initiatives, making for the closest competition for this award in years.
In the Club Bulletin Contest, The Pi Box, the always wonderful Bulletin of the San Francisco Club took Best of Show under the careful and capable editorship of Jean Dreyfus. First Place Awards went to the North Shore Club, the Sacramento Club and the Lima Area Club.
Organization and Leadership Chair Bill Price unveiled a New Guide for Club President's that was extremely well received. All Club Board's would benefit by careful study of this wonderful new tool. Club's which showed their Club Management mettle in the Club of the Year contest were Montreal, Sacramento and Adirondack. Each of these fine Clubs can wear the distinction Club of the Year in their respective classes.
The Third District has shown the way in the hugely successful development of the International Gallery for many years. At the banquet on August 12, the Third again showed it's leadership as the Toronto Club walked away with Best of Show in the International Gallery for the third time in the past four years. The other top awards, Best Use of Paper, Best Use of Type, and Most Unique went to Toronto, Rochester and Montreal of the Third District as well.
Individual accomplishment in the International Gallery was also recognized as dedicated Craftsmen went out of their way to encourage, cajole and entice Gallery entries from their local markets and printers within their acquaintance.
Accolades went to Earl Gibbs of the Winnipeg Club for 53 entries; Chris Kerlick of the St. Louis Club for 63 entries; and Bob Schneider of the Cincinnati Club for a whopping 82 entries!
New CraftNet Challenge Contributions were received from the Portland Club $555.55; the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Club $100; Pete and Joanie Peterson $100; Tony and Frieda Sarubbi $100; and Larry and Ralene Nelson $100.
Their faith in CraftNet as the "Craftsmen Club in Cyberspace" was well supported by the enthusiastic reception shown by the delegates to the CraftNet demonstration given by CraftNet Webmaster Dan Millsip. In particular, the delegates were delighted by the new I CAN section for Club Administration and began to see more clearly the inherent potential in CraftNet to widen the impact of Craftsmanship in their local communities.
Also new at the Seattle Convention were three entertaining presentations done on CD which were very warmly received by the delegates. Indeed, a CD with photo images taken throughout the convention will be made available from Minneapolis for $39.95 plus shipping in the next few weeks.
All this and much more took place in Seattle. Friendships were gained; networking flourished; romance took root; Sharing of Knowledge occurred 24 hours a day. Three Kings from Vancouver serenaded. The Energizer Bunny (Bonita) made an anonymous appearance. So too did Virgo Man. Even the Great Gallery Guru levitated into view. And only one person had too much to drink, and all agreed he wasn't even a member!
So doesn't this beg a question? How could you consider not being with us in Rochester New York next August for the 79th IAPHC Convention?
Our resounding thanks to Mike Lane, Seattle Convention Chair, and the many dedicated Craftsmen members of the Seattle Club who really worked to present a fabulous party. Man, did they succeed!
Your Craftsmen Network at Work
More and more Craftsmen members are making it a part of their weekly routine to check in on the newest Tuesday Morning News.
For example on August 5th Ray Leveque of ICON Graphics and the Winnipeg Club wrote:
"I find these TMN memo's very interesting and look forward to receiving them every week. Maybe someday I will need the help of my fellow brothers and sisters of our Craftsmen family. Keep up the GREAT WORK." And on August 8th Louis Kopecky of Fuji and the San Francisco Club wrote: "The IAPHC is the most cost effective organization I belong to. Keep up the fantastic work."
Tuesday Morning News is all about Craftsmen helping Craftsmen, it's examples of Your Knowledge Network at Work.
Bob Wagner of RB Enterprises of the SunCoast (Tampa Bay Florida) and a member-at-large, called IAPHC Headquarters and asked Kevin Keane for his opinion on whether it made sense for Bob to exhibit at the Tulsa Print Expo (Bob and his wife Barb are manufacturer's reps for a line of table top slitting equipment). Kevin suggested that Bob contact JD Prather or Darrell Morrison both of Besco and both members of the Tulsa Club.
Dale Bethea of Allied Printing in Jacksonville Florida contacted Kevin Keane for information about posting job opportunities on CraftNet. Dorsey Thomas the president of Allied Printing is a Jacksonville Club member as are fellow Allied employees Debra Thomas and Jane Fabritius. Allied Printing entered the International Gallery of Superb Printing and won a Bronze award this year. Kevin explained to Dale how to post a job listing on CraftNet by following the prompts in that section.
Denise Allan of Oregon Printing and the Toledo Club called IAPHC Headquarters in search of a printing parts supplier in Chicago Illinois. Kevin Keane faxed her several possible suppliers in Chicago as well as the 800 number for the Printer's Part's store located in Columbus Ohio.
If you have a problem finding a solution or have an example of how the Craftsmen Network has recently benefited you, we'd like to hear about it, send an e-mail to International Headquarters.
