Your Craftsmen Network at Work
Kathy Underwood of Jobs Printing and Mailing in Waukegan, Illinois, and happily retiring North Shore Club president, (Kathy had a wonderful term of office and was rewarded by being named Sixth District Club President of the year at the District's Spring Conference) called Kevin Keane at IAPHC Headquarters. Kathy had a client interested in buying printing on the back of cash register tapes. Kathy said the initial run would be quite short and wondered who might know of some potential sources. Kevin had worked with Tammie Marie Aaron of the Pittsburgh Club on a similar project some months ago. Kevin e-mailed Tammie and said he was going to give her number to Kathy. Tammie kindly provided several possible sources to Kathy.
Sue Jordan of The Printed Image and new president of the Albuquerque Club had e-mailed Kevin Keane at IAPHC Headquarters asking for leads on envelope printers to the trade in the Southwestern part of the US. Kevin e-mailed JD Prather of the Tulsa Club who provided several good leads for Sue. In addition, Kevin found the web address for the Envelope Manufacturers Association in Washington DC and e-mailed Sue with the particulars on how to reach that group.
Walt Gutowski, Jr. of Swift Printing in Grand Rapids Michigan, and past president of the Grand Rapids Club, phoned Kevin Keane at IAPHC Headquarters to say thanks for some recent assistance he obtained from the Knowledge Network of Craftsmanship -- a tremendously powerful and valuable member benefit which Kevin has taken to calling YKNAW (Your Knowledge Network At Work) {ya know what we mean?}. In specific, Walt had called Kevin several weeks ago looking for Knowledge Network assistance in two distinct areas: he needed advice and counsel on the purchase of a booklet maker, and he also needed an unusual carbonless business form. Walt reported on July 3rd, 1997 that he has received twenty e-mails from Craftsmen members responding to Kevin's "All Points Bulletin" YKNAW request for help on the booklet maker query and was able to get the business form produced by Doug Hammel of the Evansville Club and JTA Business Forms. As Walt said: "People need to realize that Craftsmen are the creme of the crop in our industry."
Walt's sentiments were echoed in an e-mail to Kevin Keane dated July 4th, 1997, from Bruce Kenworthy of Phoenix Press, and the retiring president of the Calgary Club, "Also, the Knowledge Network is probably the most profitable advantage of being a member of the IAPHC."
If you have a problem finding a solution or have an example of how the Craftsmen Network has recently benefited you, we'd like to hear about it. Just send an e-mail to International Headquarters.
1997 IAPHC Gallery of Superb Printing Update
In last weeks edition of Tuesday Morning News we promised an update on the 23rd International Gallery of Superb Printing, the judging of which took place over several days in late June, in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Final tabulations are still underway, but the news is chock full of all time records:
More than 2,800 entries! An increase of more than 450 over 1996!
Some 72 Craftsmen Clubs participated in 1997 (an all time record!)
Districts 3, 7, 8, 9, 12 and 14 had 100% of Clubs participating!
Entering firms paid the $5.00 mounting charge for 1,385 entries (almost 1/2 of the entire entry total) which is a huge increase over last year's total of 758 paying the mounting fee. Most likely this reflects the fact that printers are very busy and will pay a little extra to save a little time.
Non-members accounted for 54 entries, and paid double the entry fee for the privilege.
Four new IAPHC members were recruited.
The winners in the 1997 International Gallery will be announced at the IAPHC's 78th Annual Convention to be held in Seattle in August.
On behalf of a grateful IAPHC, Gallery Headquarters wishes to thank all Craftsmen members who made the 1997 International Gallery the grandest yet!

In the past week, Hong Kong was turned over to the Chinese government, Earth Invaded Mars with a remote control space buggy and Kevin Keane shares his views on the effects of the digital world in the graphic arts industry in the latest edition of "Know More Notes".
For those of you who are new to the Internet, a section called "Communicating on the Internet" has been added to the site to assist members with knowledge of basic Internet skills. Also included is a Club Webmaster Section with IAPHC images for downloading and adding to your club site.
