Your Craftsmen Network at work
Barry Rattigan of Riley’s Reproduction and Printing, and a member of the Calgary Club, called Headquarters in search of information on Ultraviolet (UV) coating and curing. Barry said he hadn’t a clue where to begin looking for the information. HQ told him about three sources of information and promised to follow-up with a written memo. Within the hour Barry was faxed a memo which suggested he contact RadTech International in Chicago the trade association for UV and EB curing, or Craftsmen members Larry Nelson or Tony Sarubbi.
A member of the Toronto Club called Headquarters and said he was thinking about relocating to the Miami, Florida area. He wanted contacts to approach about the graphic arts economy in that area of Florida. HQ hooked him up with Tom Stockwell, past international President and former Executive Director of the Graphic Arts Association of Central Florida; Kathie Edwards VP of Member Services for the Printing Association of Florida; Mike Emanuelli, former North Jersey Club member who had relocated to Boca Raton; and Rob Schweiger, former publisher of The Craftsmen Review from Port St. Lucie, Florida.
If you have a problem finding a solution or have an example of how the Craftsmen Network has recently benefited you, we'd like to hear about it. Just send an e-mail to International Headquarters.
Technology Highlights
Pure Cane Sugar
Folks with long memories for televisions ad spots will recall the musical jingle for "C & H, Pure Cane Sugar, from Hawaii". And everyone who has travelled across Oahu, away from the glamour of Waikiki, will attest that once the juice has been extracted from sugar cane pulp, the left over cane is an environmental problem. Sugar cane fiber is called bagasse. Neenah Paper has developed a method to use bagasse in their Environment® line of premium recycled papers. The new paper colors are Mesa White and Tortilla, and are comprised of 50% sugar cane bagasse and 50% recycled. The new IAPHC letterhead using the new logo design is printed on 34# Environment 25 Writing Linen which was donated by Bernie Hennesy of Neenah Paper through the efforts of Frieda Rothbaum, of ResourceNet and the Milwaukee-Racine club.
Printware Premiere!
At the Graphic Arts/Charlotte Show, March 13 - 15, Printware premieres a new platesetter. Printware was born in the mid-1980's of a 3M 'intrapreneur' program which spins off promising technology into new companies which can maximize the success of the technology. Over the years, Printware platesetters have won the prestigious GATF Intertech Award and have been widely adopted by Deluxe Corporation for check printing applications. The new product is the Printware PlateStream, a computer-to-plate (CTP) application for commercial printers. The new machine images up to 13.3 x 22 inch silver halide plates.
