Your Craftsmen Network at work
Jeanette Hammel of Hub Printing and the Evansville Club called HQ and asked if we could help her find a printer who could print on 40 pt board, four color on one side and black on the other. HQ e-mailed several of her fellow Fifth District Craftsmen and received prompt replies from Roy Stout of Stout Printing and the Greater Lexington Club, and Walt Gutowski Jr. of Swift Printing and the Grand Rapids Club. Both Roy and Walt knew of members in their respective Clubs, Walt Jourdan and Jamie Bickley, who might be able to help Jeanette, and promised to connect them with her. Roy offered a trenchant comment: "Ain’t Craftsmanship wonderful?"
Dennis Gongwer of Dispatch Color Press and the Columbus Club called HQ with a concern expressed by one of his clients who had hired a designer to create a specific and costly project. When the designer was asked for the digital files he refused to yield possession. HQ faxed Dennis the revised Trade Customs of the Graphic Arts and offered to explain to the client the legal doctrine of a ‘work made for hire’ under the Federal copyright statute.
Sean Graver of Lancaster Newspapers and the York Club called HQ and asked for information on Northeastern US printers employing more than 50 persons as well as asking for information on a magazine called Print and Graphics. HQ obtained the information on the specified market segment and mailed it to Sean and also e-mailed Kathy Hinsman of Allegheny Plastics and the Pittsburgh Club seeking leads on the magazine. Kathy had previously worked with Graphic Network in Pittsburgh. Kathy e-mailed and faxed the requested information the same day which was then forwarded to Sean.
If you have a problem finding a solution or have an example of how the Craftsmen Network has recently benefited you, we'd like to hear about it. Just send an e-mail to International Headquarters.
Words of Digital Wisdom
"It has been said that digital technology eats everything and tramples anyone who tries to oppose it. I believe that understates the case. You don't have to oppose digital technology to be trampled; innocent bystanders will be flattened, too. There is no neutrality in the Digital
Revolution. You must become a digital revolutionary or risk losing everything."
John Walter - former president of RR Donnelley, now president of ATT
