Club and IAPHC News
By Kevin Keane, IAPHC CEO

Heidelberg Cafe in LA

LA Club president Richard Jones dropped us an e-note that some 130 people gathered in LA to see the latest product offerings from Heidelberg and dine on some California cuisine. This was an effort of collaboration among several of the 12th District Clubs and also gave several dozen students and their instructors exposure to Heidelberg and our Association.
While were are on the subject of California, here's a couple of factoids from the February 23/March 2 double issue of The New Yorker magazine: California is the world's seventh largest economy; one in eight Americans lives in California; and 1 in 5 of the nation's high technology jobs is located there. Wow! From an article titled The Comeback, by John Cassidy.

More Platinum

Past IAPHC president John Berthelsen of the Madison Area Club became the latest of our Platinum members last week, and Jeff Cooper and Sharon Knudson of the Sierra-Nevada Club requested Platinum invoices, and Don Landers of the San Francisco Club requested Platinum member number 200 (after finding that Walt Gutowski of the Grand Rapids Club had already appropriated the numero 100 designation).

Gallery Goodness

We want to thank Bonnie Kelsch and the Portland Club for having already sent in the bulk of their 1998 International Gallery of Superb Printing entries. Receiving entries early helps us with planning for judging, processing the tsunami of entries, and even helps our cash flow, so thanks to Bonnie and her Club. And we also thank her for pointing out this blurb in the Club Bulletin of the Inland Empire Club (Spokane, Washington area)--
"The 1998 'People's Choice' Mini Gallery was a great success. We had 36 entries in 6 categories. We all judged each piece and Jasmin and I totaled the results. It is my hope that some or all of these and more are entered in the Gallery of Superb Printing held by the Seattle Club this year." Dottie Haight, Club President.
And we note that this year, every entry in the Seattle Gallery will automatically go on to judging in the International Gallery in June of 1998. It's always great to see another Club jump on the Gallery bandwagon. Let's see, Mark Davis of the Indianapolis Club ordered 150 Club Gallery Certificates today and 50 International Gallery Call for Entries, and Ron Pergande of LA wants 100 Call for Entries and Jerry Bigalk called from the ranch in Lancaster CA to say he was taking on the duty of 12th District Gallery Chair and needs 50 Call for Entries, and Stewart Graham promised to bulldog the entries from the Lima Area Club and Chris Kerlick promised the same from the St. Louis Club. Go Go Gallery!

Membership Moving UP!

It is very nice to report that after 7 months of this fiscal year, our membership count is up. Sue Jordan, president of the Albuquerque Club reports that her club now stands at 75 members, a very solid increase. CraftNet, our award winning web site, continues to draw member leads each of which is quickly forwarded to the nearest Club. In the past week we've forwarded member leads to the Rochester Club, the Syracuse Club, and the North Jersey Club. And today we got an e-mailed lead from a party who had attended the Heidelberg bash in LA, which we promptly sent to Richard Jones. And we continue to receive member-at-large renewals or new memberships from folks who are located in areas without a Club. The best news was receiving the first club bulletin from a Club just coming into existence in Springfield Missouri.

Sponsorships Too!

Our sincere thanks to Finch Paper, a long time IAPHC supporter for becoming the second Gold Sponsor of the 79th IAPHC Convention to be held in Rochester New York later this year. Mitsubishi Lithographic Presses (home to our Chairman Larry Nelson) was the first Gold Sponsor for the Rochester event.
We would also like to thank John Edgar of Brandtjen and Kluge for graciously agreeing to become an International Gallery of Superb Printing sponsor. As we said to John in our e-mailed solicitation, it seems only fitting since our award certificates are produced on Kluge equipment, and as Ms. Roxanne Mei Lum of Ignatius Press of San Francisco wrote us in January upon receiving word that a piece printed for her firm by C & C Offset, Ltd., Hong Kong had won a Gold International Gallery Award in 1997: "The award is a work of art in its own right."
Brandtjen & Kluge joins Spexel Ltd, PrimeSource Corporation, Pitman Company and the Polychrome segment of Kodak-Polychrome Graphics as early sponsors of the 1998 International Gallery. There will be more announcements forthcoming!
