Our thoughts remain with our many friends in the printing industry in Quebec and in Ontario. The ferocious five day ice storm that hit the area earlier this month had a tremendous impact on personal lives as well as on printing businesses. We have been in e-mail communication with several Craftsmen members in Montreal and Ottawa and it seems clear that the human spirit will triumph over this catastrophe. And Craftsmen have offered a helping hand to one another as well. Brian Ardron of the Toronto Club even offered to put up the family of two of his Craftsmen friends from the Ottawa Club. That's classy craftsmanship! In whatever tradition you observe, it would be appreciated if you'd offer up a prayer for speedy repairs and a rapid end to the discomfort of friends.
We were honored to have the opportunity to emcee the Heartland Print Week banquet in Omaha on Friday January 23. Some 550 graphic arts professionals from the Omaha Craftsmen's Club, the local International Publishing Management Association and the Printing Industries of the Midlands were able to view a great array of winning pieces as well as to honor deserving members of their community including Tom Steenson who was named Craftsman of the Year and two gentlemen who have been instrumental in the rise of Barnhart Press to be widely recognized as a leading Nebraska printing firm.
We received this item from Cincinnati Club president Bob Schneider: "The Cincinnati Craftsmen's Club Gallery of Superb Printing which is now a part of International Printing Week activities displayed all entries in the hotel lobby outside the banquet room. We have received over 300 entries this year, a record for the Cincinnati Club. Many of them will be sent on to the international Gallery." Thanks Bob!
We received this item from Sue Jordan, president of the Albuquerque Club: "We had a great turnout for our International Printing Week. We celebrated with our own version of 'Printing Jeopardy' which was great fun. We inducted 7 new members (and at least three more next meeting) and I won the Craftsman of the year award. Quite the surprise." No surprise if you know her, Congratulations Sue!
And this item was submitted by Sharon Knudson of the Sierra-Nevada Club: "Our Gallery Awards/International Printing Week banquet was an awesome evening. We had 127 Gallery entries, awarding 70 Golds which will automatically be forwarded to the 11th District Gallery. 98 attended the banquet. We presented three scholarships to students attending Truckee Meadows Community College's Graphic Communications program. Club members Peter Sanchez and Jon Thompson co-chaired the event." Thanks for the news Sharon, and congratulations to all Reno area members!
