Club and IAPHC News
By Kevin Keane, IAPHC CEO

We've had several requests for assistance from Your Knowledge Network of Craftsmanship (Y'KNOW?):

The first inquiry is a combination request and membership lead. Jake Ritz of Label Graphics Manufacturing Inc., in Little Falls, New Jersey called looking for a source that could run rotary embossing dies. The run direction is 15 1/8" repeat on a 31/2" web with fairly intricate embossing in a small area. He may have need for up to $150,000 worth of this business. Contact Jake or his co-workers Ollie Kahn or Tom Silvano via phone at 973-890-5665 or via fax at 973-890-1164. Jake also asked if there wasn't a Craftsmen Club that met in Clifton, New Jersey. He was referring to the North Jersey Club which actually meets in Totowa NJ. The member lead has already been passed on to Ed Levy, the incredibly effective membership chair for North Jersey.

From Gary Preston of the Columbus Club: "Good morning Kevin, still enjoy the news each week, keep up the good work. I am looking for a grommet machine. It can be either automatic or semiautomatic. We have some jobs coming in which we need to apply grommets a different was than by hand. If anyone has any info please call 800-347-7400 press option #2 or e-mail gary. preston@rossnutrition.com "

From attorney Geoff Davis of Schulman Rogers 11921 Rockville Pike Suite 300, Rockville Maryland 20852 comes a request on behalf of one of his clients who is looking for a printer who could handle a short run multi-color magazine project on a continuing basis.

Y'KNOW 2

Because of the IAPHC's philosophy of serving both the needs of the individual member as well as fostering the leadership inculcating, network incubating entities called Clubs, many requests for help are filled each week in a manner that is invisible to virtually every other member, but may provide you with a idea for your own use or may simply be good reading in the name of human interest.

For example in recent days we've fielded requests from 2 members seeking to buy small print shops and needing guidance on how to fairly value the prospective purchase. Confidentiality restraints mean that we won't identify them, but each received specific, experienced assistance.

Similarly, 4 different members asked for help of a personal legal nature. They received specific, immediate and necessarily confidential help.

Bruce Sprague of the Central Wisconsin Club wanted info about utilizing the National Scholarship Trust Foundation administered by the GATF for his Club's growing scholarship fund, and Bruce received 11 pages of info via fax.

Scott Wilson of Arlington Texas sent an e-mail inquiry to CraftNet looking for a place in Dallas where he could obtain graphic arts education. We knew that Dr. Jerry Waite of the Houston Club was an educator at the University of Houston who would be well apprised as to printing related educational opportunities in Texas, so we forwarded the e-mail request to Jerry and he responded promptly to Mr. Wilson. Visit www.uh.edu/~jwaite to learn more about a bachelor's degree program run by Dr. Waite.

Kathy Schoenick of the Madison Area Club asked us in an e-mail to help her co- worker Scott Frey in his search to find a printer in the Denver/Boulder area who could help print a bi-monthly magazine for the International Mountain Biking Association. We think Scott's e-mail message to the Rocky Mountain Club members (and one member-at-large) we identified for him, is worth repeating:

"I am looking for a good price for the International Mountain Biking Association. ...(The current printer is) running the job on a large web, and requires 85lpi and 15% - 70% dot range (!) due to gain and dropout. Needless to say, IBMA (at least the newsletter editor) is less than pleased with the appearance of the newsletter (especially when he compares it to our 150lpi offset printed local newsletter.)"

These examples underscore the truth of a July 1 e-mail from Dave Holman the newly installed Detroit Club president: "if I can continue to wave our Detroit Club banner...I was awarded the Detroit Club Craftsman of the year. Not bad for my second year in the Club. I just wish someone would have asked me to join 20 years ago when I got into this business. See you in Rochester."

It seems to us we have a pretty good story to tell regarding membership in the IAPHC. Have you asked someone to join your Club lately?

Cash-In To Win!

In last week's TMN we mentioned the great news about sterling ticket sales in Central Illinois and Los Angeles and the Tenth District and the Eighth District. Amy McCarthy of the Syracuse Club read that blurb and asked that we send her three CASH-IN TO WIN tickets, and Tammie Marie Aaron of Birmingham, Alabama also read the item and requested that we send her a ticket with some special lucky numbers for she and her bouncing baby boy. Come to think of it, we can't wait to hear how Fred Hutchinson of the Seattle Club is faring with his ambitious ticket sales efforts in the great North West. If you would like us to send you a $10.00 CASH IN TO WIN ticket (s) for one of 26 chances to win up to $1,250, just say the word.

Rochester Golf

Third District Governor Len Petitti asked that we pass along this message: He has 6 tee-times for 6 foursomes commencing at 7:00 AM on Friday August 7, 1998. If you are interested in golfing please e-mail Len at lenrcphc@aol.com

Gallery Hanging

Len also asks that any early arrivals in Rochester for the 79th IAPHC Convention at the Rochester Hyatt Regency consider lending a hand in the late afternoon and early evening of Thursday, August 6th to hang a selection of the winning pieces from the 1998 International Gallery of Superb Printing on display panels which are being provided through the kindness of the Rochester Club.

Rochester Pins and T-Shirts

In last week's TMN we noted that all attendees at the Rochester Convention are encouraged to show their Craftsmen colors by obtaining their commemorative Rochester Convention pin ($10.00) or Rochester convention T-shirt ($15.00). Amy McCarthy from Syracuse ordered her pin, Bob Schneider from Cincinnati ordered 2 shirts and 2 pins for he and his lovely bride, and Rustii Stocks of Sacramento just ordered her shirt. Let us know if we can colorize you!

Rochester Grab Bags

Our thanks to Brian Ardron of the Toronto Club who has been knocking himself out to obtain items for inclusion in the grab bags that each delegate and guest at the Convention will receive. If you or your company would like to provide an item, whether it be a pen, or a back scratcher, a kazoo or ..... all donations gratefully accepted! We need about 300 of each item. Your generosity is appreciated.

Club of the Year Tally Sheets

Bill Price has asked that we post in this week's issue of Tuesday Morning News the list of Clubs for whom he has received Tally Sheets in the Club of the Year contest. Again these are only the Clubs which HAVE submitted their forms to Bill:

2nd District Adirondack Mid-Hudson 3rd District Buffalo Toronto 5th District Cincinnati 6th District North Shore 8th District Des Moines Topeka 10th District Portland Seattle 11th District Sierra Nevada Silicon Valley Yosemite

Bill has asked that any Club that intends to participate in the 1997-1998 Club of the Year contest submit their Tally Sheets via fax 702-786-2512 by Friday July 10, 1998. Thanks!

Distribute and Print?

We are in the midst of writing the next IAPHC Communicator which will be released at the Rochester convention and thereafter mailed to every member.

In addition to requesting news items, photos of Club and District events (with cutlines) we have been asked to seek out a new method of distribution.

If the contents of the IAPHC Communicator were available on a disk in a PDF format to be printed locally (perhaps at a District level or perhaps even at a Club level) are there any volunteers to oversee the project at the respective level? This issue is of particular interest to our Chairman Larry Nelson. If you would like to assist in exploring this initiative, please let us know and let Larry know as well via e-mail at calnellie@aol.com
