By Kevin Keane, IAPHC CEO More Reader Reaction: "Just a note to tell you how much I enjoy your Tuesday Morning News. I have known you for many years and have always known you for your way with words. Your news always has information that I don't read about in the many magazines we all receive. GREAT JOB." Bob Wagner, Holiday, Florida. Consolidation Continued On July 16, PrimeSource Corporation announced that it had signed a letter of intent to acquire the assets of Bell Industries Inc. Bell distributes graphics and electronic imaging supplies to the printing and publishing industries in the Midwest, Southwest and Western United States and had sales of $70 million in the first half of 1998. PrimeSource now has 27 distribution centers throughout the United States. Meanwhile the digital file transfer specialists at PagePath announced that they had acquired the ASAP! file transfer product software from Discovery Corps. Back on the distribution front, Indigo announced on July 20 that it had appointed Litho Development and Research (LDR) as distributor of the Indigo presses and imaging products in eleven western states. LDR is based in Portland, Oregon and has 7 branch offices. Quick Blurbs for Pondering On July 22 Comp USA said it would incentivate people who place advance orders by August 14th for the highly touted new consumer computer from Apple Computer called the iMac. Advance purchasers will receive a coupon rebate book worth $800 in accessories for the iMac. On July 23 Xerox Corporation reported a healthy 17% rise in profit, but hiding in the data was an important lesson about the inexorable shift from analog to digital technologies. Digital copier and printer revenue rose about 39% accounting for 43% of Xerox's overall sales. Sales of optical copiers fell 8 percent, also now accounting for 43% of total sales. Sales of digital machines passed optical copiers by $35 million marking the first time Xerox sold more digital than optical machines. Iomega announced on July 20th, that it is co-sponsoring a bi-monthly online education series in collaboration with Dell Computer and Microsoft. 'Breakfast with Dell,' which will broadcast live at Dell's website (www.dell.com), is aimed at the challenges of operating a small business. Buried in the news release is this interesting gem: "Leading service bureaus (business centers and print shops) like Kinko's, Mailboxes's Etc., Sir Speedy, PIP and AlphaGraphics offer zip drives to their customers, so that they have access to their important files anytime, anywhere." Note which firms are listed. And those which are not! |
