Club and IAPHC News
By Kevin Keane, IAPHC CEO

International Gallery Sponsors

This week saw the receipt of commitments from of three of our four final Best of the Best International Gallery of Superb Printing Award Sponsors. We thank the fine people at Independent Machinery, and Worzalla and Baldwin Graphic Products for their marvelous financial support of this, the IAPHC's premier program. As this online newsletter is being written, we have 6 working days before we leave for the 79th IAPHC Convention in Rochester, New York. These commitments mean that we can finalize signage honoring the sponsors, use their logo in the video programs for the International Gallery Award Shows, order the awards engraved, and create, design and print a Best of the Best awards booklet. However, we have to wait for logo art from five of the 12 sponsoring vendors before we can do these things and we still need to firm up the commitment of our last verbally agreed sponsor. It seems to us this is a perfect example of the printing industry in the throes of massive change. The IAPHC will be a customer of the new model of just-in-time, print-on-demand. If the sun stays shining, and the creek don't rise.

Y'KNOW

Late last week we sent an all points e-mail request for assistance to the members of the Knowledge Network. We like to call this uniquely valuable member-to-member assistance program Your Knowledge Network Obviously Works. (Y'KNOW?).

And it does work.

Those of you who read last week's five items closely will recall Johannes Klawitter's plea for help in tracking down parts to a cutter apparently made in East Germany before reunification. Colin Campbell, president of the London, Ontario Club sent this wonderful reply: "Johannes, there is a machinery dealer in Toronto that has been around since the dead sea was alive and they always carried (no offense) 'odd-ball' makes of equipment, a lot from Europe, maybe even the Eastern Bloc. They have a Canada wide 1-800 number. Give them a call and make sure you speak to someone who has been there awhile. The name of the contact is Sydney Stone, 388 Evans Avenue Toronto, Ontario M8Z 1K7. 800-668-6055."

- In an odd quirk of timing the president of the Topeka Club, Irene Haws-Neuer sent us a Y'KNOW request at the same time we were broadcasting last week's batch.

"I have a customer that wants to flood coat white linen uncoated cover for a 9 x 12 double pocket presentation folder. The design is to have the 9 x 12 front panel printed with ink on the upper right from the center diagonally to the upper right hand corner. In addition, they want the inside printed in a flood coat and the pockets also printed in a flood coat.

Would anyone recommend a duplex stock with white on the outside and try to match the PMS navy blue to the navy duplex stock?

My customer wants to have part of their logo print in navy on the white side and the other part of the logo reverse out on the blue side. There is some concern about the ink taking a long time to dry and that it might not ever dry if we flood coat an uncoated linen stock. I would appreciate any suggestions."

You can reach Irene via e-mail at Ihneuer2@aol.com

- And another request comes from Bob Fair of the Fraser Valley Club:

"I have a client who wants an ink which will fade quickly (yes, that is what he said) I think he means in about 3-5 days. I know red is not light fast if exposed to the sun, due to ultraviolet rays degrading the color, but is there say a blue or green ink which will fade even sooner?"

You can reach Bob via e-mail at info@cambridgepress.com or via phone at 604-599-4822.

- Bill Addy of Ottawa is looking for a heat set web printer that could print 62,000 28 page calendars for him. You can e-mail Bill at addyb@ccgsjc.com

- From Randy (and Teresa) Raymond, president of the Lima Area Club: "We are adding a printing sales position to our company. We would like to talk to someone about how to set up the commission, distinguish between new orders and reorders, pay for mileage. These are uncharted waters for us, yet we know other companies have salesmen out there. How can these things be done in a painless way?" You reach the Raymonds via e-mail at MarbeeInk@aol.com

We suggest that they contact David Fellman of Fellman and Associates who knows a ton about compensating salespeople. Dave's e-mail is DFallT@aol.com

North Jersey News

From North Jersey Club president Howard Feinman:

"Just to let you know, the North Jersey Club has donated $1,000 to the Bergen County Technical Schools District for a North east Label Manufacturers program 'Nelma Flexography in High Schools.' The funds will be specifically earmarked to be used by students in the flexography program."

With its usual lead-the-way style, the North Jersey Club also reports that it will continue to pay its IAPHC dues a quarter in advance. We thank them for their continuing generous support.

G.A.L.A. Auction Donations

With deadline fast approaching, its been nice to hear from Craftsmen members like Martie Hughes of Buffalo and Marjie Swiatek of Sierra-Nevada reporting that they have been out and about gathering donations for the Gallery Awards Auction nite at the upcoming Rochester Convention. Martie has obtained a signed art print and several limited edition fine art photos; Marjie reports that her Club will bring a 'Made In Nevada' gift basket and a Reno Rodeo Belt Buckle for auctioning.

We still hope that each club sending a delegate will consider bring an item evocative of their home town. The Graphic Arts Literacy Alliance is a worthy cause to advocate and the more items at auction the more fun and successful the evening will be for all.

CASH-IN TO WIN!

There's still time to sell your remaining tickets. Wednesday's PowerBall drawing may be for a quarter billion dollars, but the odds are much better in our slightly less wealthy contest. Wayne Kreps the president of Central Illinois has sold another five tickets, the Los Angeles Club has sent in sales of $200, and we inserted a CASH-IN TO WIN Ticket in a mailing that went to 332 printers in the Twin Cities area advising them that a formation meeting for a new Twin Cities area Club. Dan Nahan, Bobby Keene, Chris Grajczyk, Bill Griffin and Dale Beane have all sent in their tickets. And Member-at-large Tammie Aaron of Birmingham Alabama has sent in her ticket as well. Want a last minute ticket? Just call 800-466-4274.

And finally, Go Go Diablo!

We had a nice chat with Heinz Hofmann president of the Diablo Club. He was ordering recognition pins, new member pins, t-shirts, certificates, a new club banner, and more. But the best part was the slogan Heinz has for new member recruitment in the upcoming year "99 in 99!" We wish him and the other members of his Club the very best in attaining that goal!

Because of Rochester Convention duties Tuesday Morning News will not appear for the next two weeks. Perhaps you could take the opportunity of our hiatus to peruse some of the wonderful features of our award winning website CraftNet at http://www.iaphc.org

Among the features you will find there are new Chairman's messages from IAPHC Chairman Larry Nelson, a new issue of Know More Notes; news releases about upcoming events and much much more.

Yours in Craftsmanship,

Kevin Keane IAPHC Minneapolis Minnesota
