Club and IAPHC News
By Kevin Keane, IAPHC CEO

International Gallery Sets New Record

As we went to e-press, the last deliveries of International Gallery entries received on Saturday June 13, and Monday June 15 pushed our entry count to 2,976, a new all time record.

Additional promised entries which will be hand delivered by judges or arrive via overnite courier on Monday should push us close to 3,000 and maybe over. And again we profusely thank the many individuals and Clubs and Districts who strove so mightily to make this the largest International Gallery ever. The IAPHC Board raised the entry fee this year and still we set records. That's a testament to your hard work and to the power of the Gallery program. It also is a lesson to us about perceptions of value. Despite the fee increase we remain the most economical event to enter. When all is said and done we will set records for the greatest number of unmounted entries (people will pay money for us to save their valuable time). And non-member entries. And entries from ad agencies. And number of firms entering and so on.

1999 marks the 25th Silver Anniversary year for Gallery, Tom Blanchard of the International Gallery Committee says he thinks our goal for next year ought to be 4,000 entries! Further, he says it is easy to get entries if one takes the time to ask. Larry Leece of the International Gallery Committee wants to see us produce a world class design for the 25th International Gallery Call for Entries and to broaden our sweep to include the advertising community. This writer would like to see a Silver hologram of the Gallery logo be prominently featured. Your thoughts on how to further the development of this our premier program would be welcomed!

Guide for Club Presidents

We were copied on a nice e-mail note from Tom Blanchard, retiring president of the Toronto Club to Bill Price the retiring IAPHC Organization and Leadership Chair. Tom complimented Bill on the Guide for Club Presidents which was made available at the Seattle Convention. Tom has had an excellent year and told Bill that if a Club President will use the materials in that wonderful guide they too will look back with satisfaction after an enjoyable and rewarding term. If you are coming into office as Club President you might want to ask your immediate predecessor to pass along the Guide for your use.

Y'KNOW Requests

From Cathy Hatfield of the Greater Lexington Club: "I am needing names/addresses/phone numbers of newsprint vendors in the area. (Lexington Kentucky) I am at a loss. Can you help?" Contact Cathy via e-mail at cathy@williamsmcbride.com

From Larry Azvedo of the Sacramento Club: "My boss (also a member) needs some job definitions for Graphic Artist and Graphic Designer. I have been unable to find them on the Internet. Do you think there is a book or job manual that might have definitions commonly used by industry employers to define employee job duties and classifications?" Contact Larry via e-mail at lazvedo@osp.ca.gov

Craftsmen Foundation Growth

Our thanks to Diane Graham of the Winnipeg Club and Liz Neibauer of the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Club for their recent submission of respective $100 contributions to The Craftsmen Foundation. The Foundation continues its growth path thanks to your generosity.

In Memorium

We received word that past International President Thomas Mahoney passed away recently. Tom was the oldest living past International President. He was listed as a life member even today on many Club rosters and it would be appreciated by his wife Pat if you could remove his name. Tom served as IAPHC President in 1954-1955 and after his retirement put together a fascinating printing museum collection. He was an enjoyable man to chat with, a real raconteur, and will be much missed by his many friends in the IAPHC. If you would like to send a note of condolences to his bride, you may do so:

Pat Mahoney
1796 Gainsboro Rd
Davis IL 61019

We were also saddened to hear that Victor Donath of the Santa Monica Bay Club passed on May 12th. Vic was a longtime 12th District Deputy Governor. He had a passion for the history of printing and was a big proponent of International Printing Week and as well, was a substantial supporter of the International Printing Museum. Vic's story was like that of the century. Born in the city that Alois Senefelder called home, Prague, Vic left his homeland and lived in China for a time before coming to the U.S. He worked for many years for Regency Thermographers. His many friends in the 12th District and across the association join in saluting this fine Craftsman.
