Industry News
By Kevin Keane, IAPHC CEO

"Really enjoyed keynoting the 8th District IAPHC conference this weekend. The Craftsmen's motto is "Share Your Knowledge" and their group is a good example of organized networking. This was my first time at an IAPHC event, and I was surprised at how many of the 100 or so attendees owned or worked in quick or small commercial printshops. My thanks to Jackie and Larry Roy and all the other folks for their hospitality."

Bob Hall's Monday Morning Fax newsletter, June 15, 1998.

Bob is Executive Editor of Quick Printing magazine and he was kind enough to re-print a blurb from a recent Tuesday Morning News in that magazine's June issue.

Interestingly, the association for quick printers, the NAQP, has just announced a name change to "Print Image International."

Industry News with a Gallery aspect

- On June 18 International Paper announced an agreement with Mead Corporation to combine their respective distribution businesses, xpedx and Zellerbach under the name xpedx. Zellerbach has more than 30 primary distribution centers and more than 40 retail stores serving smaller printers. Ironically, one of the award winners in the just completed International Gallery of Superb Printing, was a Zellerbach promotional piece for the Matrix paper line. The booklet was called "The Craftsmanship of Spain, The Blades of Toledo" a reference to the legendary sword making skills of Toledo artisans. Several years ago we had a Gallery entry from the newspaper known as The Toledo Blade, now we understand from whence they drew the name. (Thanks to 11th District president Jeff Jarvis for forwarding the Zellerbach item.)

- Suttle Press was listed in the June issue of American Printer magazine as the 43rd fastest growing printer in the U.S. and the fastest in Wisconsin. This is the fourth year in a row that the company has made the "Top 50 Fastest Growing Printers list. Suttle Press, based in Waunakee, is home to several Madison Area Club members including John Berthelsen, past IAPHC president. A wonderful piece produced by Suttle for Wisconsin Paper was among the 3,000 entries in the International Gallery this year. In the Wisconsin Paper corporate profile we found this item: "In the first 50 years after Gutenberg invented the printing press, more than 6 million books were published."

- On June 18 Printware Inc., announced that Taylor Corporation had placed an order for several hundred thousand dollars worth of PlateStream MicroPlate Platesetters. Taylor Corporation is the parent to well known wedding and social stationery printer Carlson Craft. "We selected Printware's equipment after a thorough search of printing technology alternatives and extensive real world testing at one of our plants. We've been impressed with the PlateStream's reliability, speed and cost-effectiveness, and believe it is the best computer-to-plate system in the world." Taylor Group Vice President John Schmitt.

Among the judges in this years International Gallery was Corinne Ort from Carlson Craft in Mankato, Minnesota. She was based at a judging station across from judges Mike Scott, Chris Grajczyk and Jody Sorsen who were examining a entry with some remarkably detailed engraving. She offered some explanations as to the process and the three judges asked how she knew so much -- that's when Corinne told them she assembles the ever growing roster of Gallery entries submitted each year by Carlson Craft.

Ron Pergande of the Los Angeles Club and Gummed Papers of America was our Gallery go getter in his part of the world this year. A self marketing brochure entered by Typecraft spoke about Computer to Plate: "The benefits abound. Fast proof turnaround (for those time sensitive jobs) alterations performed without the need for manual film restripping (a major cost saver) and the finest quality print result.

- On 23 June, Mail-Well, Inc., announced that it has acquired Gould Packaging, Inc., of Vancouver Washington. Gould specializes in products such as cushioned envelope mailers, bubble packaging and mailing boxes for mass market retailers. Mail-Well expects Gould to complement its Quality Park office products division.

- On 19 June, on the widely watched PBS program "Wall Street Week with Louis Rukeyser" one of the featured panelists, Kenneth Heebner of Capital Growth management recommended Asia Pulp and Paper as an inexpensive stock that will re-bound as the Asian economies settle down. We first brought the analysts excitement over Asia Pulp and Paper to your attention in the May 12th issue of Tuesday Morning News (TMN) in an article called Retro Rupiah, or Pulp Fiction? Don't forget that all past issues of TMN are archived on the IAPHC's award winning website CraftNet at www.iaphc.org

- Heidelberg USA has announced the Heidelberg Academy of Education and Training. The Academy offers solutions in advancing operator skills and awareness of current trends in technology. Courses and seminars are available on the full Heidelberg product line --prepress, digital imaging, press, bindery, and finishing systems. Emerging Technologies in Gallery

Entries in this year's International Gallery of Superb Printing mirror the rapid advances in digital and color technologies in our industry, a category we call Emerging Technologies in the Call for Entries. Among this year's crop of cutting edge entries:

- The Digital Revolution from the Fraser Valley Club in British Columbia submitted an excellent piece produced on the Agfa Chromapress.

- Typecraft from Los Angeles submitted a fun and educational 6 color brochure which was produced without film; prepress was done using the Creo Computer to Plate technology.

- Stevenson Photo Color of Cincinnati entered a wonderful piece called the Sweet Dreams Spring 1998 catalog, all of which was printed using the stochastic method.

- Digital Print Solutions/The Castle Press (another entry gained by Ron Pergande) entered a star wars like piece for some entertainment designers which was printed on a Xeikon Digital Color Press, roll to sheet, manually scored and gatefolded.

- KingsWeb in Mississauga, Ontario and the Toronto Club entered an eyecatching self promo piece to market their hexachrome capabilities. In that brochure was this item: "According to NAFTA statistics there are over 7,000 printing plants with 6 color capability across North America, while there are only about 300 eight color presses worldwide.

- Line and Tone Digital Color Imaging and Printing (of the North Jersey Club) entered a piece to market their six color hi-fi Pantone Hexachrome printing. The brochure advertises: "The Line and Tone hi speed T-1 Data Network, WAN and Internet communications site lets you send your job back and forth through our electronic network at 'warp' speed. You can receive softproofs electronically and even supervise digital photography shoots in real time."
