By Kevin Keane, IAPHC CEO Congratulations to John Kohnke We would like to add our congratulations to those many received by John Kohnke who just completed a very successful term as president of the National Association of Litho Clubs. We look forward to John's continued involvement in the NALC and the IAPHC. The Craftsmen Foundation Reaches another Milestone Our thanks to Jim Slife of Pioneer Graphics and the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Club for his $100 contribution to The Craftsmen Foundation which has now passed the $12,000 mark, thanks to the generous support of many, many individual members, Clubs and Districts. Club Bulletin Comments Attention new Club Bulletin editors. We thought the following thoughts captured from an e-mail dialogue between Larry Kryski, bulletin editor of the London, Ontario Club and Lesley Addy of the Ottawa Club express very well a central purpose of every club Bulletin. "It was pleasant surprise when Colin Campbell, our club president advised me that we had won the Third District award for the most improved newsletter. I have agreed to perform the newsletter duties again in the coming year. We have focused our newsletter toward generating additional members in our club, which had suffered quite badly in recent years. The intent has been to keep it functional -- newsy, easy and quick to read, with a subtle emphasis on the benefits of being affiliated with the Craftsmen. I've chosen a look that suggests we mean business...keeping it simple, clean and well illustrated with photos; based on the idea that if people see their friends enjoying their membership, then there will be some unspoken peer pressure to join. So far our membership has been soundly rebounding." CASH IN TO WIN! The brainchild of IAPHC Secretary-Treasurer Tony Sarubbi, the CASH IN TO WIN! Promotion is gathering steam. Wayne Kreps, new Central Illinois Club president sold his initial ten tickets and promptly asked for ten more. Eighth District Governor Cindy Johnson sold a couple dozen of the $10.00 tickets at her recent Spring Conference and has asked for 25 more. Richard Jones, the Los Angeles Club president reports that his Club sold 20 tickets. Jim Richmond, the famed Vancouver Club Bon Vivant "raised close to $700 USD" in his guise as Sergeant-at-Arms at the 10th District Spring Conference. Remember, the goal is 2,000 tickets sold and 26 winners of up to $1,250. Anyone can purchase a ticket, if you'd like us to send you one or more CASH-IN to WIN! tickets just fax or e-mail your request to IAPHC Headquarters. Springfield Club Charter Night Today marks the Charter evening for the Springfield Area Club in Springfield, Missouri. In attendance tonight, Charter President Russ Renshaw is expecting IAPHC Chairman Larry Nelson, Eighth District Governor Cindy Johnson and other exuberant 8th District members joining in the celebration. To our newest Club we shout Welcome! Y'KNOW Request "I am trying to locate a company that would print paper bags for me. The quantity is 10,000. They would be a PMS green, flat size is 15 1/16" x 12 1/8" folded and glued is 4 5/8" x 10". Prints on outside only. Stock is regular shopping bag recycled. If you know of a company that is interested in this please let me know." Bill Addy, Ottawa Club. Bill can be reached via e-mail at laddy@cyberus.ca Tom Blanchard, president of the Toronto Club has already passed along a Toronto area lead to Bill, but more inquiries would be welcome. Gallery Gusto The 1998 International Gallery cruised through the 3,000 entry mark setting an all time record, for this, the IAPHC's prestige program. The public relations campaign designed to benefit the winners and the sponsoring vendors will kick into high gear commencing with the Rochester Convention at which the International Gallery Awards Show will take place. Many of you received a letter from us last week soliciting your help in securing donations of goods and/or services for the Auction which will take place in conjunction with the Gallery Awards Show. If you haven't received a copy of that solicitation letter, we would be happy to send you one. Remember that a key beneficiary of the Auction is the Graphic Arts Literacy Alliance (G.A.L.A.). Your help in making the Auction the best possible, will be gratefully appreciated by the IAPHC and by G.A.L.A. Speaking of the marketing sizzle afforded by the International Gallery of Superb Printing we'd like to share this June 26th e-mail from North Jersey member (and 1998 International Gallery Judge) Dan Marantz: "Kevin, just finished the June 98 Printing Impressions. In the article about Quantum, on page 22, they talk about Gallery. I remember this piece because Kathy Schoenick (fellow judge from the Madison Area Club)is a big Rolling Stones fan." Rochester Convention T-Shirts and Pins Just a reminder to the many Craftsmen members who have already registered for the 79th IAPHC Convention to be held in Rochester, New York August 8-11, 1998, at the Rochester Hyatt Regency: you can still get your copy of the commemorative Rochester Convention pin ($10.00 US) or a Rochester Convention T-shirt ($15.00 US). Just fax or mail your order and payment instructions to IAPHC Headquarters. Don't forget to show your colors! Finally, Best Wishes to the Barnhart Family We received word yesterday that Barnhart Press of Omaha, Nebraska a longtime supporter of the Omaha Club and other printing industry associations, and home to some legendary Omaha Craftsmen including former 8th District president Sandy Barnhart, suffered a catastrophic fire over the weekend. We wish them all the best as they get their well known, award winning firm back in business once again. We are sure the Omaha printing community will rally around the Barnhart's to see them through this difficult moment. |
