By Kevin Keane, IAPHC CEO Toronto Leads the Way AGAIN! The March 98 issue of PrintAction magazine features a wonderful article about the Toronto Club's 77th President's Dinner and Dance at which the Toronto winners in the 1997 International Gallery of Superb Printing were presented. The article is titled "Canadian Printers Best in the World" and refers to the winning of the International Gallery Best of Show by a Toronto area printer, which has become almost a regular event in the past five years! We also learned that our good friend Jay Mandarino of the Toronto Club has auctioneer talents in addition to his world class printing and graphics abilities. This is good to know because Rochester Convention coordinator Paula Steenson is looking for candidates to conduct the Graphic Arts Literacy Alliance (G.A.L.A.) auction which will take place as part of the presentation of the awards show for the 1998 International Gallery at the Convention in August of this year. GALA's literacy initiatives are being fostered by long time Baltimore Club member Dick Burnham who was himself a first time entrant and winner in the International Gallery in 1997. The PrintAction article was accompanied by several photos including one of a very deserving Brian Ardron receiving Craftsman of the Year honors from Toronto Club President and International Gallery Committee member Tom Blanchard. We would be remiss if we didn't also acknowledge the fine folks at Quebecor (Aurora/Richmond Hill) whose cheque for $840 arrived today representing 21 Duplicate International Gallery Awards. A Momentous March 21st! At the Rochester Club's banquet on Saturday evening, our favorite cigar chomping Governor, Mr. Len Petitti was presented with Craftsman of the Year honors from his home club. (Despite a first day of spring blizzard, 198 people still turned out.) Len, like Brian Ardron who was mentioned in the previous item, is an extremely dedicated Craftsman member and both gentlemen are widely respected in their Third District for their devotion. Len works at Eastman Kodak, and was heartened to hear the news last week that Kodak- Polychrome will be sponsoring the opening ceremonies at the Rochester Convention's kick-off celebration at the fabulous and historic George Eastman House. Len has been a Rochester Club member for more than 11 years and has served on most of the club Committees including his special passion for International Printing Week/Gallery of Superb Printing. Len holds the standing record for driving the longest distance to act as a judge in the international Gallery of Superb Printing, a feat made all the more remarkable by the fact that he stayed at the home of this writer, trying to rest atop an ancient waterbed, all the while inadvertently practicing synchronized swimming in his slumber. Meanwhile on the Left Coast, Craftsmen from around the 11th District gathered on March 21st to celebrate the nuptials of Sierra-Nevada members Jeff Cooper and Sharon Knudson. (they of the unique e-mail moniker -- Knooper; and the absolute coolest Wedding Invitation we have ever seen, {at least since Calgary members Bruce and Shannon Kenworthy's } which of course we urged that Jeff and Sharon enter in the International Gallery.) Rumour has it that many exceedingly clear eyed Craftsmen gathered at the home of 11th District Governor, Marjie Swiatek (and her wonderfully patient husband Bob) the morning after the wedding ceremony to further toast to the bliss of Bride and Groom. Congratulations to one and all. A Platinum Foundation The IAPHC membership is clearly endorsing the idea first promulgated at the Seattle Convention to create a program for those Districts, Clubs and individual members who were financially able and who wished on a strictly voluntary basis to contribute moines to build a reserve fund for the IAPHC so as to assure its continued viability into the next millennium. This idea is still being fleshed out. It may be that the creation of a formal foundation will be the result of the support coming from around the continent. While the final shape may not yet be determined, members continue to respond warmly to the idea. This week we especially thank the Detroit Club for their gracious contribution of $500 and also recognize individual members of the Detroit Club who each contributed $100 --Ryan Bambach, John Hages, David Holman, Mike Stinnett and Eugene Tata. This week the Sacramento Club added its name to the list of Clubs who have endorsed the Platinum idea. In addition, Thomas Gallo, president of the Yosemite Club sent his check this week, as did member-at- large Martie Hughes and one Teresa Sherwood. This week we will likely go over the $10,000 mark in contributions. WOW! The power of an idea. The power of Share your Knowledge. Thank you to all who found themselves in a position to contribute and elected to do so. CraftNet Kudo's We have previously told you about the support received from the Sixth District and from the Des Moines Club is sponsoring a month's worth of server rental space for CraftNet. Now the Des Moines Board has voted to donate the rental fees for the months of April and May as well. Thank you Des Moines! Meanwhile, immediate past IAPHC Chairman Chris Kerlick has turned up the burners in his search for sponsorship support for the further development of CraftNet. He's got Heidelberg leaning.....Go Chris Go! |
