By Kevin Keane, IAPHC CEO GALLERY, GALLERIE, GALLERY, GALLERIE! Consider this item from the 17 February 1998 issue of TMN: "Similarly, we were reading the January 1998 issue of Graphic Arts Journal and came across an article about Precision Litho in Salt lake City, Utah. The award winning seven year old firm utilizes the Hexachrome 8 color process, and therefore we sent them a International Gallery Call for Entries." We gave Pat the number and a contact name for Precision Litho because also on Friday we received a Gallery entry (printed via Hexachrome) from Precision Litho, a first time entrant who paid at the $65 un-mounted, non-member rate. Well it's that time folks. Time to buckle on your Gallery Go-Getter armor and head off to battle. As the above example shows, asking people to enter is the best way to grow our premier event. Remember, we are like AVIS in the old car rental TV spots. "We may not be number 1 (yet), but we try harder." Our goal this year is to top 3,000 entries for the first time. We can do it if everyone helps. And we should be asking all kinds of people we interact with in our business lives: ad agencies, paper mills, equipment and supply vendors, non-member printers, educators, magazine personnel, the list is endless. Last year, I invited Bob Murphy, CEO of Japs-Olson Company here in Minneapolis to judge the International Gallery. He sent a gracious letter declining because he was moving his firm's location. Last week I received a press release that Bob had just installed the first North American ten color Heidelberg Speedmaster five over five perfector. So I sent him a personal note of congratulations and noted all the other leading Minnesota printers who enter the International Gallery and sent a Call for Entries too..... Last week we had entries submitted by Karen and Glenn Woolley from the Hamilton Club; three more from Applied Printing Technologies (Howard Feinman of the North Jersey Club); three from Apex Die in San Carlos CA; and Precision Litho; and the countdown to 3,000 entries continues! New Gallery Sponsors We received payment from Brandtjen & Kluge for their International Gallery Sponsorship on Friday along with a membership-at-large fee for John Edgar, the main marketing man at B & K. Welcome aboard John and thanks for your support! Also on Friday, I received a call from Tom Wright, Advertising and Promotions Manager of Neenah Papers based in Roswell, Georgia. He had been contacted by Frieda Sarubbi regarding Neenah's participation as a Gallery sponsor. I told Tom I would fax him a letter explaining some of the particulars and the opportunities. That letter was faxed at 1:00 PM Monday, 23 March. At 4:00 PM I received a phone call from Tom indicating that Neenah would be cutting a check for $5,000 to sponsor an International Gallery award! Thanks to Frieda and of course to Neenah. |
