Club and IAPHC News
By Kevin Keane, IAPHC CEO

Sounds Familiar

Also from the June issue of Worth, legendary stock picker Peter Lunch writes about H & R Block: "The basic fact of H & R Block's business model is that the company takes in 80 percent of its $1.1 billion in annual revenue and more than 100 percent of its profits during the tax season.. In other words, Block makes money hand over fist in January, February, March and April and sees it dribble away the rest of the year."

Well gentle reader, that model is similar to that of the IAPHC in that we rely on the International Gallery of Superb Printing for 38.5% of our annual expected revenues and the lion's share of that revenue is received in the last 45 days of the fiscal year. Indeed, as of the end of April some $80,000 of expected International Gallery revenues are still wending their way to Gallery Headquarters.

We know we've been a pain in the neck on this dear and patient reader, but if you have a moment to round up your entries, THE TIME IS NOW! Thanks!

Recent Gallery Entrants

2 from Letter Press Services, Albuquerque NM
4 from Thames Label and Litho, St. Mary's Ontario
3 from Smith and McKay, San Jose CA
5 from Anderberg-Lund, Minneapolis MN
1 from Lassen ROP, Susanville CA
16 from Connecticut Printing and Graphics, Danbury CT
44 from the Wichita and Mid-Kansas Clubs
11 from the Adirondack Club
1 from the Hamilton Club
1 from Crest Typographers, Santa Clarita CA
16 from The Printing Source, Fenton MO
2 from Diamond Graphics, Minneapolis MN
4 from The Printer, Des Moines IA
5 from Ace Printing Company, Springfield NJ
10 from Driscoll Label, Fairfield NJ

As you can see, entries come from every corner of North America and beyond. We thank all of these participants for their kind support of this crucially important IAPHC program. Gallery grows by your individual determination to make it grow.

Past IAPHC Treasurer Jerry Bigalk sent an e-mail indicating that he had personally contacted firms like Woods Litho a nationally recognized, award winning firm in Phoenix; and DiFatta Graphics, a past Gallery entrant, and both were preparing their entries for shipment. Jerry points out that for the 2nd year in a row, the 12th District has 100% participation from its member Clubs!

In addition to the above entries, we've heard from members and nonmembers from as far away as Hong Kong who say their entries are on the way. Thank you to everyone who helps make the International Gallery grow and prosper.

We also learned this past week that the fine folks at Minuteman Press International have been running the International Gallery press release in their franchisee magazine The World of Minuteman for the past three months; and that Screen Printing Magazine has also run the news release, as has the Printing Industries of the Carolinas (PICA).

International Gallery Sponsorships

We were remiss last week in not acknowledging that our own erstwhile Chairman Larry Nelson had been responsible for the initial contact at Baldwin Graphic Products which resulted in Ed Kelly securing an agreement with Baldwin to become the latest Gallery sponsor. Last week we also received the check from Western States Envelope (home of incoming Sixth District president Pete Peterson) for their International Gallery Award sponsorship and on Monday received word that Neenah Papers sponsorship fee is on the way. As Fifth District Governor Ray Rafalowski points out, we all need to make a point to express our gratitude to the excellent firms who have agreed thus far to assist us with sponsorships. They are investing in us and we need to show them that we acknowledge and appreciate their support. These firms include PrimeSource Corporation, Pitman Company, Spexel Ltd, Brandtjen & Kluge, Kodak- Polychrome, Finch, Pruyn, Neenah Papers, Blanks USA, Western States Envelope and Baldwin Graphic Products.

A Fine Fifth of a Time

An e-note from Doug Hammel, chair of the recent Fifth District Spring Conference held in Evansville, IN. "Just a quick note to tell you what a rousing success the 5th District Conference was and to let you know that over 100 Craftsmen and guests participated along with International Chairman Larry Nelson and his beautiful wife Ralene. The group enjoyed a wide variety of activities including our annual All Club party, which I am proud to say, resulted in the Evansville Club taking home the trophy for our Beverly Hillbillies theme. We also had 4 excellent technical sessions (including attorney Larry Bennett of the Cincinnati Club who will also be presenting on OSHA and drug testing at the IAPHC Convention in Rochester this summer); the local Germania Maennorchor and the Casino Aztar. Not everyone was lucky enough to take home winnings from the Casino, but everyone who attended was a winner!"

More e-Thanks

"Thanks to you and your staff for working so hard. Your efforts are appreciated." Sue Jordan, president, Albuquerque Club in an e-mail of May 5.

I look forward to 'sharing that knowledge' with the rest of our club here." Rustii Stocks, Sacramento Club in an e-mail of May 4.

"Keep up the fantastic work." Steve Reid, Member-at-large, Ft. Smith, Arkansas in an e-mail of May 6.

Van Hanswyk-Jasser Nominations

Just a reminder that nominations for the Van Hanswyk-Jasser Award will be accepted until June 15th. This award, named for two past presidents of the New York Club will be presented at the Rochester Convention. The award is intended to recognize the efforts of someone who has built bridges between graphic arts education and the industry which so desperately seeks talented employees in the digital era. We have received one nomination thus far.

Rochester Convention Registration

Last week saw the first Convention registrations arrive for the IAPHC's 79th annual Convention to be held in Rochester New York, August 8-11, 1998. Our thanks to Jeff Mayer, Ray Lauria, Karen Schuetz, Tony and Frieda Sarubbi and Ray Rafalowski for their registrations. Again, if anyone would like us to fax the hotel and convention registration forms and the tentative program please let us know. Several folks have inquired about day rates for the Convention activities. Convention Coordinator Paula Steenson passes along these rates:

Saturday August 8 Trade Show FREE
Saturday August 8 Evening Events $65
Sunday August 9 Day Events $65
Sunday August 9 Evening $30
Monday August 10 $65
Tuesday August 11 Day Events $65
Tuesday August 11 Evening Events $70

We also want to thank Brian Ardron of the Toronto Club who has begun soliciting Canadian based supplier firms in terms of their participation in the Mini-Trade Show to be held on Saturday August 8 at the Convention hotel. Today Brian received word that Flint Ink Canada will be at the Show. Hopefully we can sell out the show thanks to Brian's efforts.

CASH-IN TO WIN

A reminder that anyone who hasn't seen the News Release explaining the CASH-IN TO WIN contest may receive a copy via fax just by contacting IAPHC Headquarters. Tickets are being sold coast to coast. The goal is 2000 tickets sold by the Rochester Convention.

NO TMN NEXT WEEK

Because of our travel schedule TMN will not appear next week. Don't forget that all past issues of TMN have been archived on CraftNet, just in case you need your weekly TMN fix!
