By Kevin Keane, IAPHC CEO More Reader Reaction to TMN From Lonn Lorenz of the San Francisco Club: "As always, TMN is great. This last issue was exceptional with information that is very relevant and current." From Karen Lawrence Managing Director of TAGA, the Technical Association of the Graphic Arts: "Hope all is well with you and IAPHC. I have really enjoyed your Tuesday Morning reports. The TAGA Conference will be held in Vancouver May 2-5, 1999. Would you be so kind as to send a copy of our brochure to your list?" Club Bullet Items Ed Levy, membership maestro of the North Jersey Club sends word that his Club is inducting 28 new members on 11 February, bringing Ed to 53 new recruits on his way to a personal goal of 93 for the year. WOW! Ed is an incredible inspiration. IAPHC Communicator #3 will be edited by Kathy Schoenick of the Madison Area Club. (Thanks Kathy! You do a great job with your Club's Bulletin.) Chairman Jeanann Georgianna has set a deadline of 19 February for submission of articles and other items to Kathy. Amy Shiner of the Rochester Club called to say that she has shipped the bulk of her Club's 1999 International Gallery of Superb Printing entries. If your Club has already held your local Gallery and those entries are waiting to be shipped, we sure would appreciate early receipt of all entries! From Cathy Hatfield of the Greater Lexington Club: "I visited the Indianapolis Club for their Monte Carlo Night on January 23rd at the invitation of Kevin Kowaleski and I had a wonderful time! I was a little hesitant since I only knew a few members of the Club, but that feeling didn't last long. As are most of our fellow Craftsmen, they are a great group and made me feel welcome right away. This is the third different Club I have visited in the past 2 years. I would urge all my fellow Craftsmen to travel around to other Clubs to attend events like these. It is a great way to rekindle friendships made at Conferences, as well as a way to see how other Clubs do things." In Memorium Past Second District Governor Vince DiPalma sent along the very sad news that Joseph Fielder, long time stalwart member of the New York Club was stricken by a heart attack on January 23 and did not recover. Joe was very well known in his home Club as well as throughout the Second District. In particular, he was the driving force behind International Printing Week celebrations in New York City each year. Condolences may be sent to his wife Mary Ellen Brown at 28 East 10th Street, Suite 7E, New York NY 10003. Y'KNOW Requests Your Knowledge Network Obviously Works (Y'KNOW?) - From new Twin Cities Club member John Gorski: "Anyone talking about DocuTech upgrades for Y2K? There must be some options. If you could shed any light, I'd appreciate it." John can be reached via e-mail at jgorski@maven.meyers.com - From North Jersey Club member Jim Doremus: "I work for a company that has gone through some growing pains and find we have more imaging equipment than we can realistically use. Is there is an equitable solution to ending unwanted leases? Any and all suggestions are welcome. Thank You!" Jim can be reached via e-mail at jdoremus@epinc.com - From Silicon Valley Club member Kathy Smith: "I am need of a source for a green marble background that can be downloaded into Illustrator or PhotoShop. Need to be able to output as PostScript for our AGFA Imagesetter. We will be using the background to produce a foil and embossed business card for one of our customers and will need to output as CMYK. If shareware backgrounds are available, that would be dandy. Am not sure if this is the platform to ask the IAPHC, but have seen so many good results from other questions posted in the most timely Tuesday Morning News." Kathy can be reached via e-mail at ksmith1333@aol.com - From Seattle Club Member Jan Buttle: "I am looking for someone who makes index tabs with metal tab extensions. I have already contacted Century, but they only make folders with metal tab extensions. Could you put the word out for me? Thanks!" Jan can be reached via e-mail at jbuttle@gadesign.com - From Central Minnesota Club member Dan Sand: "My company has run into an interesting project. We need 700,000 pieces on 80# cover stock. The flat size is 23 5/8" x 10 13/16". Three panels. Left panel is 8 7/16" Center panel is 7 5/8" Right panel is 7 9/16" The center panel needs a die cut window 5 5/16" x 8 7/8" We need someone who can fold the right panel over the center and put down an L shaped pattern with permanent glue and then fold one more time. This could become a monthly project in greater or lesser run lengths" You can reach Dan via e-mail at dan.sand@nahan.com or via phone at 320-654-5743 - From Akron Club member Ron Taggart: "We are in the process of buying a new 4C or 5C half size with coater. Currently our largest press is 19 x 26 2C. We have 2 questions: 1) Assuming the press is equipped with a sheet cleaner and coater, do you think it is wise to buy the additional 5th unit? What kinds of uses do you put your fifth unit to and how much do you use it? Currently, we print a fair amount of 4C, but are shut out of some markets because they want to see a press proof. Will this new press open up a market that has more utilization of a fifth unit than we are presently in? 2) We are looking at a Shinohara, Sakurai or Heidelberg 74 with perfector. If you have any of these presses with a perfector, how well does the perfecting unit work on coated stock, how practical is it to use, and how much work do you get that you might not otherwise get had you not had the perfector. Any comments on the reliability of your press would be appreciated. If you can help me with these questions, I will send you a very helpful series of spreadsheets that solve estimating layout problems, job outs, copier purchasing decision maker, label layout planner, etc, via e-mail." You can reach Ron via e-mail at ron@printingconcepts.com or via phone at 330-688-5133 - From True Sims: "Need a very special hand binder for a quick turnaround job preferably in the NYC area." You can reach True via e-mail at true_sims@callaway.com - From Salem Krieger: "Need a source for the wrappers that go around baseball cards." You can reach Salem at salem@salemkrieger.com - From Chris Kerlick of the St. Louis Club: "Publication Printing is looking for a sales person. No need to live in St. Louis, just bring in lots of sheet fed work! We just put in 5 Color that can also perfect. We have a new cutter and have saddle stitch, perfect binding and all other kinds of bindery. We have a brand new electronics system for prepress including a new flatbed scanner. Lots of capabilities. Salary in line with business delivered. Contact Chris via e-mail at chrisklrk@aol.com That's All Folks Yours in Craftsmanship, Kevin Keane IAPHC Minneapolis Minnesota |
