Club and IAPHC News
By Kevin Keane, IAPHC CEO

Super fast Y'KNOW

Our thanks to the several members who jumped on individual items in last week's Tuesday Morning News so quickly and so expertly. John Berthelsen of Suttle Press in Madison, Wisconsin gave Ron Taggart of Printing Concepts in Stow, Ohio a wonderfully detailed response to Ron's query. Cindy Johnson of John Deere in Waterloo, Iowa sent Kathy Smith of R.D Smith and Company in Milpitas, California an expert offer of assistance in reply to Kathy's question. And Dan Sand of Nahan Printing in St. Cloud, Minnesota got an immediate phone call of assistance from Sue Schmidt of PrismaGraphics in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Note the speed of response and the fact that the answers often came from a fellow member located hundreds of miles distant. Y'KNOW is an incredibly valuable member benefit. DonchaKnow?

Thanks to Thom Anstadt

We would like to formally thank (and compliment) Mr. Thom Anstadt, who is owner and president of Colorgraphics in York, Pennsylvania. When Thom was approached by Fourth District Governor Mike Donnelly with a request for help in re-printing our stock of IAPHC Foiled Notecards (White note cards with matching envelopes with the IAPHC's signature logo embossed in Gold Foil,) he not only readily agreed, he did the job quickly and the finished product looks fantastic. We will be sending Thom a special thank you and also encouraging such a high quality shop to consider entering the 25th International Gallery of Superb Printing as well. If you would like a supply of the notecards, they are packaged 25 to a set, and cost $10.00 US, plus S/H. They are perfect for thanking speakers and other club supporters; and other forms of personal communication.

Craftsmen in the News

There were a couple of familiar faces on the front cover of the December, 1998, Wayzgoose Gazette, the newsletter of the International Printing Museum -- Los Angeles Club president Richard Jones and Santa Monica Bay Club president Mark Barbour who also happens to be Curator of the Musuem -- were among the hardworking souls who readied the temporary exhibit of the Museum while plans continue for a new permanent site near downtown LA. If you would like to be a supporter of the International Printing Museum, why not contact Mark via e-mail at printmuseum@earthlink.net For a modest contribution you can help ensure that the history of our craft is accorded the care and respect it deserves.

Meanwhile, the February 1999 issue of The Printer's Northwest Trader, continued the series of always provocative articles by Seattle Club President Milt Vine. In the current article, Milt quotes member Dick Lunde's thoughts as recounted in a recent TMN.

And in the February 1999 issue of Print-Equip News, Professor Hank Apfelberg of the Graphic Communications Department at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo refers to the lead story in the December, 1998 issue of the Los Angeles Club Bulletin Craft-O-Grafs as the impetus for his thoughtful article about Johannes Gutenberg's contributions to mankind's love affair with the printed word.

Y'KNOW Requests

Your Knowledge Network Obviously Works (Y'KNOW?)

- From North Shore Club member Gary Smith: "My company is currently in the process of writing two manuals, 'Standard Operating Procedures' and an 'Employee Handbook.' Do you know of anyone who currently has these in place that would be willing to share a copy we could use as a reference?" You can reach Gary via e-mail at TnGSmith@aol.com if you would be willing to lend him a copy of your employee materials.

- From Toronto Club member Trevor Williamson: "My problem is this - We have been successfully working with Ventura 8 files that one of my customer's supplies, and we can successfully output these files to single pages. However, we have been unsuccessful at outputting these files through our imposition software. We have searched numerous vendors for solutions and have had many calls out for help, but we have had no responses that have been able to give us a solution. We would be interested in getting in contact with anyone who is successfully outputting Ventura 8 files imposed, and who would be willing to give us some technical advice. I understand that Ventura 9 is soon to be released and I'm sure my client will start using that as well, but in the meantime, I would like to resolve my Ventura 8 problems before we need to contend with Ventura 9 problems. Anyone who feels they can offer me some assistance can contact me via e-mail at twilliamson@utpress.utoronto.ca or via snailmail:

University of Toronto Press Inc Attn: Trevor Williamson, Operations Manager 5201 Dufferin Street Toronto Ontario M3H 5T8 Canada

- From Rochester Club member Robin Goodwin: "The Rochester Club is searching for pictures from the Calgary Convention in 1983. Specifically, we are looking for pictures of the Rodeo. Could you put this in TMN and see if we get any bites?" You can reach Robin via e-mail at rgoodwin@hammerlitho.com

- From long time member John Favat: "If any members would like to receive a FREE subscription to my new magazine, Binding, Finishing and Distribution, please have them contact me at the following: John Favat, Publisher/Editorial Director john@ggnetwork.com We will need their mailing address, telephone, fax and e-mail address and any information they can provide about their operations."

Platinum Reserve Fund Growth

The IAPHC Board of Governors would like to thank the following members who have recently contributed $100 each towards the continuing growth of the Platinum Reserve Fund:

Ben Thiel, Milwaukee-Racine Club
Patti Wolf, Sierra Nevada Club
Jeanann Georgianna, Syracuse Club
Howard Drayson, Jacksonville Club
Dennis Gongwer, Columbus Club
Norm Belanger, Calgary Club
John Leininger, Triangle Club
Sue Schmidt, Milwaukee-Racine Club

Several of these nice people are contributing for the second year running.

CASH-IN TO WIN!

Reports are beginning to surface that lots of CASH-IN TO WIN! tickets are being sold. The Los Angeles Club bought $200 worth of tickets; Third District Governor Len Petitti has been able to sell some tickets to folks inside Eastman Kodak who enjoy receiving TMN on a referral bounce; Sixth District President Pete Peterson has exerted his usual sales magic. Haven't bought a ticket yet Bunky? Not to fret, each member will be receiving a ticket in an upcoming mailing.

International Gallery News

The IAPHC is delighted to add Fuji Photo Film USA to its roster of world class sponsors for 1999. We got the word from Mr. Tim Combs, Vice President Marketing, that Fuji has committed to sponsoring the Best Digital Printing Award in the Best of the Best competition in the 25th Annual International Gallery of Superb Printing.

Rob Rosati of the Columbus Club asked us to add some new categories to the International Gallery this year for Wide Format Ink Jet Printing. We will use categories F-90 through F-93.

Wide Format Ink Jet Printing Categories (Minimum Size 16 x 20)

F-90     300 DPI
F-91     600 DPI
F-92     1200 DPI
F-93     1600 DPI

The Rochester Club's Amy Shiner has submitted the first big group of International Gallery entries for 1999. More than 100 entries arrived last week with more on the way.

Stewart Nestor who coordinated the very successful Portland Club Gallery this year along with Bonnie Kelsch, called yesterday to say that Portland's entries will be arriving shortly.

The Topeka Club is having a joint Gallery with the Kansas City Club and will be submitting all first place winners according to Irene Haws Neuer, president of the Topeka Club.

Please check your calendar friends. It is time to get your International Gallery entries assembled and sent to International Gallery headquarters at 7042 Brooklyn Boulevard, Minneapolis, Minnesota 55429 USA. If you need a copy of the Call for Entries, please call 800-466-4274 or fax 612-560-1350 or e- mail us.

No TMN Next Week

We will be traveling to speak at the Vancouver and Fraser Valley Club meetings next week and thus will be unable to write TMN.

That's All Folks!

Yours in Craftsmanship,

Kevin Keane IAPHC Minneapolis Minnesota
