Local International Printing Week Celebrations

Cincinnati as reported by Fifth District Deputy Governor Bob Schneider, we thank Bob for this submission:

"The Cincinnati Printing Week Council, which is made up of all the Local Printing Organizations in Cincinnati especially Craftsmen Club members, has scheduled the biggest and best Printing Week events ever for this year, 1999. There are 14 members on the Council.

The first event is on the 19th, "Take a Printer To Lunch." We will have over 400 in attendance this year. A $5,000 scholarship is awarded to a local school that has a Graphic Arts program. This is an ongoing program, The Mayor of Cincinnati will say a few words and present the Proclamation declaring January 17 - 23, 1999 Printing Week.

The second event is the annual Bier Stube on the night of the 20th. There is live entertainment with plenty of Good Craftsmanship to go around for all in attendance. We will have over 200 people.

The third event is the Banquet which is held on the 23rd (there will be over 250 people in attendance.) This is where the Gallery of Superb Printing entries are displayed outside on the mezzanine adjacent to the Banquet Hall. The Printer of the Year is awarded a plaque at this function by the previous year's winner. The winner this year is Jim Brown, Vice President of the S. Rosenthal Company. We also present to the selected company, an award called the William Maxwell Award. William Maxwell being the first printing company in the area (1793). Last year's award winner will present the plaque to this year's winner which is the Stevenson Photo Color Company (home to Fifth District Governor Bill Orr.)

To be selected for these awards you have to be nominated by your peers and be active in the local printing community in helping the Printing Industry flourish and grow. The Printing Week Council members then discuss the nominees and select the winners by a vote.

The winners this year are members of the Cincinnati Craftsmen Club and their companies are also very active."

Greetings from the Grand Rapids Club, as reported by Dennis Stauffer, Club Secretary, we thank Dennis for his submission:

"On January 14th, 1999, the Grand Rapids Club of Printing House Craftsmen joined with the Litho Club of Grand Rapids to celebrate Printing Week. We dined at Rembrandt's at Bridgewater Restaurant. After dinner we enjoyed presentations of honors and scholarships. This year our Club presented two scholarship stipends to Ferris State University students in the amount of $750 each. The recipient of The Craftsman of the Year award was Dennis J. Stauffer. Dennis teaches printing and photography at Kenowa Hills High School as he has for the past 23 years and feels very honored to be called "Craftsman" by his fellow printers. After all presentations were made, our keynote speaker was introduced. Ms. Jill Roth, editorial director of American Printer magazine spoke to us about the trends in graphic arts and the printing industries."

And from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, as reported by Dr. Harvey Levenson, Department Head, Graphic Communication Department, Cal Poly:

"Mr. Keane, Thank you so much for your always interesting reports in TMN. I look forward to receiving them. On another matter, I thought I would share with you the way Cal Poly celebrates International Printing Week. Each year we celebrate it with a four day visiting lecture series which attracts invited speakers from all over the nation. It is also a time when we have dedications and honor various Cal Poly Graphic Communication Department supporters. This year January 19th is Creo Day, featuring Bill George from Creo Inc, and David Milburn from EFII. On January 20 our attendees will hear from Joanne Hirsch of Hurst Chemical Company and Len Leger, Director of Graduate Studies, School of Printing Management and Sciences, RIT. Thursday's big event is the Printing Week Banquet at which the honored guest will be Lee Brown retiring after 25 years of Graphic Communications technical services. And on Friday we will have Grafix North America Day, as Jeff Miller, Vice-President/General Manager of Grafix addresses our attendees."

If any reader would like to have a copy of Cal Poly's 4 day schedule faxed to them, please let us know at IAPHC Headquarters.

From the Hamilton Club's Karen Woolley, comes this note to Dr. John Leininger of Clemson University (John is the IAPHC's International Printing Week chair): "The International Printing Week posters were fabulous and we got them in the post in lots of time to put up for Printing Week. While our Club is busy with Spring Conference planning, we are promoting the event at our own firms and with Club members. Our newest member is planning a week of activities at her own company - the AdCulture Group in Milton, Ontario. She was thrilled to have a theme for the bulletin board at work and a structure to work around. We hope to do a cake cutting at our January 28th meeting. We also use this occasion to present 4 scholarships - 2 each from 2 local design colleges. With our speaker topic of CD-ROM replication. A sales rep from Printing Arts of America came up from Boston to call on me. Kevin Keane was quick to point out (in my 'who are they?" call to Headquarters) that the International Printing Week poster was designed by Lonn Lorenz of PAA's affiliate company George Litho in San Francisco. We may get a strong new member because of the connection! Thanks for all the work John. You make a difference here -even though you are far away."

And at Clemson University, Dr. John Leininger reports that an Open House is set for 21 January in the Graphics Department at which all equipment will be running and a job will be produced as the International Printing Week theme reminds: 'Concept through Completion: Clear Communication Demands Print.' John says they are expecting 300 people for the banquet that evening after the Open House festivities.

Y'KNOW Requests

Your Knowledge Network Obviously Works (Y'KNOW?)

1) In last week's TMN we offered several examples of how members assist one another often across thousands of miles. Twelfth District Governor Bill Leahy who is located in Los Angeles reports that he was able to get a job produced at a member printer located in Jacksonville, Florida, Brut Printing, thanks to the Knowledge Network and Bill Maguire of the Jacksonville Club.

Now Bill has another request: "Has anyone attended a seminar which features a film titled "Making your Business Really Fly, The First Steps?'" If you have any information, Bill would be appreciative of any insights. You can reach him via e-mail at wleahy@webtv.net

2) Chris Kerlick of the St. Louis Club is looking for any bright ideas to help with the following problem/opportunity: A client has presented us with an interesting challenge. The client has several hundred thousand retail point of purchase signs. The signs are a hard plastic 1/8" thick. The signs are about 8 inches tall and less than 2 inches wide. Each sign has a price stamped at the top. The client wants to 'print' additional information on the signs. Obviously we could try silk screening but no one around here wants to tangle with an order of this size. Does anyone have any other ideas? You can reach Chris at chrisklrk@aol.com

3) Roger Buck a member in Girard, Kansas with Perfection Forms sends this request: "Can you clarify something for me? Is the standard A-4 size in Europe 8 1/4" x 11 3/4"? And do you know of anyone producing that in a continuous format?" You can reach Roger via e-mail at rogerbuck@terraworld.net

4) From Los Angeles member Mike Patterson comes a request for assistance in tracking down a book titled Visions, written by Sister Mercy Faustina Chappeth and published by Harold Caen in New York in the 1930's. If you have any info you can send it to us and we will forward it to Mike.

5) From Howard Drucker of Drucker Communications comes this e-mail: "Can you refer me to printing companies in the New Jersey or New York or Pennsylvania market with Iris Giclee equipment?" You can reach Howard via e-mail at hjd@druckercommunications.com

6) From Glen Ripper of the Seattle Club: "I am looking for someone who can print 4CP + 1PMS one side and Black and PMS back side on a web. The stock will be furnished by K/P Corporation. 24# Gilbert Neutech with a custom watermark. This is a gift certificate that needs consecutive MICO numbering in magnetic ink so it can be scanned the same way as a check. There are three different versions, 275,000 US Version for $5.00 and a Canadian version for 30,000. Black type plate change only. Also 10,000 or 50,000 for a $20.00 certificate.

I have found a printer who can do the numbering on small web. The web would need to be about 12" wide. For the imprinting. The certificate is 5 x 2/34" With the grain going 2 3/4". It would be great to find someone who can do it all, so I wouldn't have to mess with a second vendor for the numbering. Maybe a forms printer with more than a 4 color press could do the printing part. Let me know if you come up with someone. We will furnish whatever size web they need, and can slit the roll on the re-wind. Call me at 206-720-5416 if you can help. Thanks!"

Sierra-Nevada Club Is Cooking Up a Book

From Sierra-Nevada Club President Sharon Knudson:

"Some of the Worlds Greatest Cooks are Craftsmen.

You too can Share Your Culinary Knowledge with Craftsmen across the Continent.

Send your Favorite and Most Secret Recipes to Pam Goin, Cookbook Chair at Palmer's Laminating, Phone is 775-331-0866 Fax is 775-331-2960

'Cooking With Craftsmen II' is being produced by the Sierra Nevada Club as a fundraiser for IAPHC Convention 2000 to be held in Reno and to fund Club projects. Recipes are being gathered from the four corners of the IAPHC, making this truly an 'Internationally Flavored' book.

Recipes must be received by March 15, 1999 to make possible distribution at the 1999 Convention in St. Louis this August. Please help make the committee's life easier by sending in your recipes early. Thank you!"

Gallery Gearing Up

Several issues ago, we reported in TMN the news that the Portland Club and the Des Moines Club had enjoyed the largest Gallery of Superb Printing entry counts ever. It seems this trend is continuing. This week we heard that the Jacksonville Club and the Central Minnesota Club and the Milwaukee-Racine Club all marked their largest Gallery's ever.

Also this week, the deluge of entries to the 25th International Gallery of Superb Printing began. Walt Gutowski Jr. of Swift Printing and the Grand Rapids Club submitted a beautiful Calendar project. Marvin Stried, of BAT Graphic Partners Inc and the North Shore Club sent in an entry which arrived today.

Mark Lodermeier, president of the Central Minnesota Club tells us he expects the largest number of International Gallery entries from his Club in history in 1999, So too from the Des Moines Club. And we hope your Club too.

Ramona Johnson from the headquarters office of PIP Printing in Agoura, California has requested enough copies of the Call for Entries for each of the PIP franchisees.

The Sir Speedy franchisee magazine recently featured a story about the success of Sir Speedy in Laguna Hills, California in the 1998 International Gallery.

Woody Ryder of Minuteman Press International headquarters in Farmingdale, New York published a nice blurb about the value of belonging to the IAPHC and entering the International Gallery in The World of Minuteman magazine's January issue.

And the January issue of Quick Printing magazine includes a nice story by old friend Cy Stapleton about the value of entering a graphic arts competition such as the International Gallery.

The entry period is open now. Don't delay! Don't psyche yourself out by saying you don't produce award winning work. Try your luck, and see how impressed your client's are when you are successful!

More Reader Reaction to TMN

From Craig Kevghas of CPR Marketing in an e-mail of 12 January: "I really enjoyed your newsletter. Maybe Scitex, TrendWatch or one of my other clients could sponsor a future issue???"

From Allen Miller of Portland in an e-mail of 13 January: "Thank you for all of the newsletters you have been mailing me this past year. The information has been helpful in my many daily occupations."

From Mark Lodermeier of Bankers Systems in St. Cloud, Minnesota in an e-mail of 13 January: "I just wanted to thank and commend you on the great job you do on the Tuesday Morning News each week. Our organization is lucky to have you."

From Gary Fesmire of Fesmire Graphics and the Triangle Club in an e-mail of 14 January: "I just want to tell you how much I enjoy your TMN. Being a graphic arts salesman, it helps me keep up with the latest information. Keep up the great work."

From Elaine Millen, past president of the Charlotte Club in an e-mail of 15 January: "I've been a member since 1974 and think that the TMN is a great vehicle for getting the most up-to-date information on a weekly basis for all of our membership. When I found out about TMN, I was excited to be able to "Share Your Knowledge" with other members. Your reports are good, thorough and forward thinking. It's good to know that the IAPHC provides such a wonderful service."

From Jeff Reeck, of the Madison Area Club in an e-mail of 18 January: "Did a promo for the TMN at our meeting last Wednesday. A little pitch about how the newsletter alone is worth the price of admission and how to use the Y'KNOW section to their advantage. The following members would like to be added to the list."

Again, we thank the dozens upon dozens of members who have written us over recent months to say they enjoy TMN. And again we plead that everyone make an effort to get e-mail addresses for every online member in your Club. Today, 12 more members receive their first issue of TMN.

TMN will not appear next week due to our International Printing Week travels.

That's All Folks

Yours in Craftsmanship,

Kevin Keane IAPHC Minneapolis Minnesota
