International Printing Week 2000

For those of you working on your January calendar of events, the dates for the 2000 International Printing Week celebration are January 16-22, 2000, the theme is "Ripping into the Future - Creating a Lasting Impression."

Bethany Parks of the Capital District Club is looking for inspiring ideas to help promote International Printing Week in the Albany, New York area. If you have helpful suggestions you can e-mail her at bhparks@aol.com

St. Louis Convention Reminder

Okay all you procrastinators, don't forget to get your convention registrations submitted pronto. Also, if you don't book your hotel room by July 15th, 1999, you run the risk of paying rack rates. Ouch! If you need us to fax you the materials for registration, please just say the word.

EDSF Awards Program

The Electronic Document Systems Foundation (EDSF) honors outstanding educational programs at Xplor International Global Conference and Exhibit in November. EDSF seeks to recognize higher education programs and continuing education programs around the world that are innovative and benefit the industry and the public at large. Dr. John Leininger of Clemson University reminds us that the deadline for applications is July 1st, however you may still have time to properly submit an application if you contact Jeanne Moulds via e-mail at JCMoulds@aol.com with a name and contact person for Jeanne to follow-up.

Your Knowledge Network Obviously Works (Y'KNOW?)

Y'KNOW Requests

A) From Baltimore Club member Richard Burnham:

Topic #1

We have 2 Epson Printers. 1. Epson 700 2. Epson 1200. Neither printer allows us to print from Quark as high-res images.

We have called/e-mailed both Quark and Epson. Neither will give us an answer other than suggesting it is the other vendor's fault.

Can anyone help tell us what the solution is other than re-creating the file in Illustrator/Photoshop which is impractical.

Topic # 2

RE: Agfa Film

IPR (Impower) previously made by DuPont. If your company is currently using this product in your imagesetter, we would appreciate your comments.

1) Have you noticed inconsistencies?

2) Screen values fluctuate?

3) More than normal film speed change from roll to roll?

If anyone can help with any of these items, please e-mail to graphic428@aol.com or call 410-467-7071 or fax 410-366-7866.

B) From Central Minnesota Club member Brad Mockros:

I'm looking for the great people of the IAPHC to Share Their Knowledge. We have a Crescent 32 that we use to produce plates and film. The machine is in a room by itself, but it is not what you would classify as a dust free environment. Would anyone have any suggestions on what steps we might take to help reduce the dust problem? I can be reached via e-mail at bmockro@bankerssystems.com

C) From Central Illinois Club member Wayne Kreps:

Anyone out there working with Pantone Hexachrome? I'm looking for some people to 'Share their Experiences.' Also looking for someone who might be interested in selling a small quantity of AgfaProof Hexachrome materials. Please reply to me at wkrepsig@aol.com

Marriage Merger Mania

1) From syndicated columnist Liz Smith: "They just don't make wedding invitations anymore like the one I received from Raquel Welch. It bears a gilt heart on the cover and is in italic script and beautiful inside. Welch, judging by this invite at least, remains quite the old-fashioned romantic." Said invitation was printed by our own 12th District Governor Bill Leahy.

2) John Kohnke, past president of the San Francisco Club of Litho and Printing House Craftsmen married Rose Burcheri, past treasurer of the Montreal Club at 3:34 PM EDT on Saturday 8 May in old Montreal. The wedding was held in the chapel of the Sacred Heart behind the main altar at the Notre Dame Basilica. Simultaneously, John's home district, the 11th District paused their Spring Conference to raise a toast in the newlyweds honor. Many Craftsmen will remember the Notre Dame Basilica at Place d'armes as one of the most inspiring sites visited during the 1996 Montreal Convention. John and Rose met at the Jacksonville Convention in 1995 and developed a great friendship. And now, these two Craftspeople bring new meaning to the IAPHC's motto! Their only regret is that they will need to miss the St. Louis Convention, something about a Sicilian honeymoon. Congratulations to them both!

Farewell

Long time IAPHC employee Teresa Sherwood will be leaving the association at the end of the week to prepare to move to North Carolina where she and other family members plan to issue frequent weather bulletins back to Headquarters especially during January. Teresa has worked hard for the Association for many years and her contributions will be much missed. We hope you will join us in wishing her the very best in her new and warmer future.

That's All Folks!

Yours in Craftsmanship,

Kevin Keane IAPHC Minneapolis Minnesota
