Club and IAPHC News
By Kevin Keane, IAPHC CEO

Y'KNOW Works!

"Kevin, I would like to say thank you to Mike who e-mailed me with answers to my metal tab question (in the 9 February 1999 issue of TMN). In fact, no sooner had the Tuesday News been posted, than the message came in. Thank you for your help and thanks to our helpful members!"
Seattle Club member Jan Buttle in an e-mail of 16 February.

"By the way, I ran into member Roger Buck at a TradeMart show this past week. He shared with me the story of finding a vendor in Canada which resulted in a $150,000 sale. Thanks to the Knowledge Network at Work."
Topeka Club President Irene Haws in an e-mail of 28 February.

Y'KNOW Requests

Your Knowledge Network Obviously Works (Y'KNOW?)

- From Waterloo-Cedar Falls member Lory Johnson: "We are in the process of developing new products for our wholesale line. I am looking for a supplier of STOCK corrugated displays to get started. Small quantities, like 25 to 50, to begin with. They can be white or plain pastel colors. I would prefer someone in the Midwest so we aren't paying lots for shipping. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the St. Louis Convention!" You can reach Lory via e- mail at ljohnson@gandrpublishing.com

- From new Twin Cities Club member, and long time Fort Wayne Club member Jody Sorsen: "Has anyone ever heard of or dealt with 'David King Enterprises' out of Social Circle, Georgia? He supposedly deals paper, and has been referred to us by one of our customers. I would like to hear any opinions or testimonials." I can be reached at 612-542-4443 or via e-mail at jody.sorsen@mplsoffset.com

"My name is Scott Thompson and I own a Ryobi 3302 with Diamond dampeners. I am having some problems and would like to compare notes." Scott's phone is 812-332-9789, or respond to alikes@law.indiana.edu

- A blind request: a member is interested in getting any information on market wage rates being paid for jet press (envelope) press operators. Prefer Midwest data, but anywhere would be useful. Please direct any responses to kkeane1069@aol.com

- A blind request, a Fortune 1000 company would like to speak with firms interested in bidding on a requirements contract. The company needs a preferred supplier with National Account experience -- multiple plant locations can require as many as 11 million impressions per year. Short to mid size run lengths. Currently using offset production, black and white, but moving to digital. High Quality, Fast Turnaround, Demanding Client. A 3 to 5 year contract would be expected. Serious inquiries only. If interested, please respond to kkeane1069@aol.com

- Wendy Greenberg a member of the East Bay Club sends this request: "My company is interested in finding any stock video or still images of web presses and bindery equipment. Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated."

You can reach Wendy via e-mail at prres@ix.netcom.com

- Lee Sullivan, formerly a Waterloo-Cedar Falls Club member phoned today with a request. She would like to speak to anyone with experience in the operation of a NSC PC 2000 combination manual punch and electric coil inserter. Lee can be reached at 870-445-4571

Club Program Perhaps?

- From a letter from Los Angeles Club member Robert Donahue, president of the Graphic Arts Training Council: "I would be willing to volunteer my services to the organization, less expenses, to help defray the cost of educational programs. I have presented Management Programs at two 12th District meetings, as well as presenting a program on ISO 9000 at a Club meeting. You can talk with Bill Leahy or Richard Jones regarding the content and presentation. I have presented programs for our local Clubs on TQM/ISO and How to Prepare and Hold a Meeting. I presented two programs for the Print Image Association on February 20. I will be facilitating a program for PIAMS in Denver in March on ISO 9000 for the Graphic Arts Industry, I am also doing three days at the Gutenberg Festival in May. If interested you can contact me at 818-567-1357 or via e-mail at gatc@juno.com

Education News

"Dear Kevin, I have been receiving Tuesday Morning News for almost a year now. I have enjoyed the information immensely.

I thought your readers might like to hear about the progress in the Department of Graphics and Imaging Technologies, which is part of Pittsburg State University, in Pitsburg, Kansas. Instruction in printing has been offered in some fashion at Pitsburg State since 1910. We are planning a ten year celebration culminating in a grand century of print education in 2010.

Our department will be celebrating its annual Print Week (March 8-13, 1999) winding up with our 25th Annual Awards Banquet. The banquet will have Mr. Harry Benson (Benjamin Franklin) as our keynoter as we keep an eye on the past in getting ready for the future.

Our program offerings in the Department of Graphics and Imaging Technology have experienced a 37% increase in enrollment since the Fall of 1997. Our enrollment of 236 students is the largest ever. Our two majors -- Commercial Graphics and Printing Management continue to attract quality interested young men and women (our enrollment boasts 46 per cent women students) and the vast opportunities that await them in the next few years.

We have ten faculty, just moved in to a $30 million Kansas Technology Center and are constantly looking for partnering opportunities in the following areas: equipment, materials, operating funds, scholarships, speakers, serve on our National Advisory Board and other options as well. In 1998, support from industry amounted to $800,000. We are focusing on establishing the Laboratory for Flexography Studies and Research. If anyone would like to contact me they can reach me via e-mail at jrodrigu@pittstate.edu or check out our website at www.pittstate.edu Keep up the good work." From an e- mail of 16 February sent by Dr. Jesus Rodriguez, Department Chairman.

Closed circuit to Dr. Rodriguez, in turn, we hope you might be interested to learn that several collegiate graphic arts programs have submitted entries produced by students to the International Gallery of Superb printing. In the past several years, entries from Clemson University and Arkansas State University graphics programs have been impressive award winners. We hope your students will join them in this our 25th Anniversary year of celebrating excellence in the arts and sciences of printing through the International Gallery.

Speaking of the International Gallery

In addition, to the more than 100 entries submitted by the Rochester Club on behalf of Rochester, New York area printers, we received 27 entries from the Central Minnesota Club last week and 4 entries arrived yesterday from Diamond Die in Omaha, Nebraska, home to Dave Ehresmann and Cynthia Petermann.

We know we become a broken record afflicted by a scratchy needle when it comes to encouraging you and cajoling you and wheedling you to get your entries submitted sooner than later! Jody Sorsen also e-mailed us looking for a copy of the Call for Entries so that he can begin assembling the entries from Gannet Offset (is that the same Gannet??? yes, it is!) How about assembling your entries?

Now's the time! If you need a Call for Entries, just ask.

Speaking Further of the International Gallery

Last time out, we told you that Fuji Photo Film USA has become a sponsor of one of the Best of the Best International Gallery Awards, and Tim Combs, V-P of Marketing at Fuji was kind enough to send along his e-mail address, so he is one of more than 50 people receiving their first issue of Tuesday Morning News today!

Yesterday's mail brought the sponsorship cheques from Neenah Paper (we thank Tom Wright who is now receiving TMN also) and from Finch, Pruyn Paper (where Tom Lapham, as a new member of the Adirondack Club is also now receiving TMN).

We thank all these fine companies, soon to be joined by PrimeSource Corporation, and Kodak Polychrome Graphics and other well known industry suppliers in supporting the mission of the IAPHC.

If you know of a firm you would like us to contact regarding sponsorship, please let us know

Look For

The all member mailing containing a copy of the Call for Entries for the 1999 International Gallery of Superb Printing, and a copy of the 1998 International Gallery Best of the Best Awards booklet and a copy of the CASH IN TO WIN ticket has just been mailed to everyone thanks to the good offices of Chris Schneider of SSSpeedy in Milwaukee.

Meanwhile Kathy Schoenick of the Madison Area Club is hard at work exerting her usual magic in editing this year's third issue of the IAPHC Communicator which the ever generous Gordon Lindstrom of Gordon Graphics has offered to print.

Meeting Us in St. Loooie?

Don't forget, the IAPHC's 80th annual Convention is coming up in St. Louis, Missouri, August 7 -10, 1999 at the Hyatt Regency Union Station in the heart of St. Louis, the Gateway City. Charles Miller of Metal Arts Engravers in Kansas City just faxed in his registration today. John Berthelsen called to inquire about registering yesterday.

If District Governors would like to help promote the Convention, Paula Presents can provide an ad slick to be included in your Spring Conference program. Or, you can purchase from the IAPHC Headquarters, a supply of t-shirts ($10 each US) or pins ($5 each US) to be sold at your Conferences or to be given away as door prizes. Paula Steenson can be reached via e-mail at ppresents@aol.com or via phone at 402-346-3950

Any member who would like to introduce your business and your special abilities or products might want to consider a Mini Trade Show booth. For an incredibly reasonable fee of $250, you can say hello to fellow members and tell then what you do or a living. Share Your Knowledge in an up close and personal manner. For example, do you have any idea what Charles Miller does at Metal Arts Engravers? Or what exactly Dave Albrecht of GretagMacbeth sells? That's the purpose of the trade show, to introduce attendees to the range and power of the Knowledge Network. If you buy a Trade Show booth you will also receive a 5 per cent discount on your Convention registration.

You will receive the same 5 per cent discount off your registration if instead of buying a Trade Show booth you would prefer to purchase a Business Card ad in the Convention program which is also priced at $250.

Just a reminder, to avoid paying rack rates at the Hyatt Regency Union Station, you MUST make your room reservations by July 15th, 1999.

Look for the Convention brochure mailing coming to a mailbox near you.

That's All Folks!

Yours in Craftsmanship,

Kevin Keane IAPHC Minneapolis Minnesota
