Club and IAPHC News
By Kevin Keane, IAPHC CEO

Good Ink!

We'd like to thank long time member Paul Kissel for his ongoing coverage for all things IAPHC related in Print-Equip News, including running a photo of the current IAPHC Executive Officers (along with candidate for Executive office for next year, Tom Blanchard) in the current issue. Bonnie Kelsch of the Portland Club was the photog.

We heard from 12th District Governor Bill Leahy, and Los Angeles Club president Richard Jones today that the IAPHC has a nice cover story in the current issue of the Printing Journal, a magazine for the graphic arts published on the West Coast and Paul Lamendola of the North Jersey Club e- mailed today to say he had just read a good story on the benefits of belonging to the IAPHC in the March issue of Print and Graphics a magazine published on the East Coast. Plus we have an upcoming Gallery mention in PrintAction magazine in Canada.

CASH-IN TO WIN!

Wow! The all member mailing containing a copy of the 1999 International Gallery Call for Entries, and the 1998 International Gallery Best of the Best brochure and a CASH-IN TO WIN ticket has obviously hit. We've received tickets back from: Wayne Kreps, Central Illinois; Sylvia Osterday, Cincinnati; Cheryl Adams, Erie; Gene Barisonek, North Jersey; Mike Essenmacher, Detroit; and Tom Skarupski, Erie. Thanks to all of these individual members, and we also want to thank Jeff Mayer, Second District Governor for graciously printing more tickets and in a hurry. Talk about Print on Demand! If you need more tickets just call 800-466-4274! You want 'em, we got 'em.

Your Knowledge Network Obviously Works (Y'KNOW?)

- From Jerry Bigalk of the Antelope Valley Club: "I have an excellent V-50 Miehle Vertical, Serial Number S/N V-2003531, with extra chases, parts, and scoring and perforating jacket." Contact Jerry via e-mail at gl.bigalk@netport.com

- From Chris Kerlick of the St. Louis Club: "Wanted -- Salesperson for St. Louis based Sheetfed Publication business. Great salary and benefits. Mid- Sized company with new electronic prepress department, multi-color presses, complete bindery. Not necessary to relocate to St. Louis." Direct inquiries to Chris via e-mail at chrisklrk@aol.com or to 314-652-6020.

- From North Jersey member and Gallery Guru Dan Marantz: "I have an opportunity to get a Kluge diecutter and foil stamping unit placed on my floor. I can sell this kind of work, but I don't know how difficult it is to do foil stamping and to find an operator. If you could put the word out I would appreciate it." You can e-mail Dan at DMPrintAce@aol.com or phone him at 973-467-4422. We have already gotten replies for Dan from Colin Campbell of the London, Ontario Club and from John Edgar at Brandtjen & Kluge; but perhaps you can shed additional light for him.

- From North Jersey member Tim Dalton: "I am going to lead a class on Advanced Estimating for the AGC in New York, starting later this spring. I am looking for input from fellow Craftsmen members with regard to two items: Topics worthy of inclusion in such a discussion; and New Ideas and Creative Techniques of Estimating.

The first item, Topics, is just that. In the new large world of Graphic Communications, what are the most interesting and most important new technologies to address? Is it vehicle wraps, or new ways to integrate estimating with manufacturing? Should we devote lots of time to paper or how to respond to huge RFQ's from Fortune 100 type firms? What do the members say?

In the area of new ideas and creative ways to accomplish the work, I am looking for examples of creative ways that estimators are using available information and technologies. How about people issues of communication and morale? What are people doing, and how does it work?

I have been teaching such classes for over 10 years, and I find that the best learning comes from the most current practitioners. I want this class to address 'real world' issues and provide the most help to those involved. Anyone who contributes will receive a copy of all submissions in the best spirit of 'Share Your Knowledge' If there is enough interest perhaps we can find a way to post the exchange online." Tim can be reached via e-mail at TimDalton@aol.com

Two Color Press User Group

Dan Weisenbach, owner of a printshop in Columbus, Ohio, has announced the formation of a "Two Color Press Users Group" for owners and operators of AB Dick Century 3000 and 3500 model presses, Heidelberg Quickmaster, Ryobi 3302, AB Dick 9985 and other portrait feed 2 color presses. You can contact Dan if you would like to be a part of this new unaffiliated discussion group at 614-251-8585 or via e-mail at danno@beol.net

PS to Dan, there's a very strong probability you will be contacted about joining our Columbus Club, if you haven't yet become a member!

More TMN Reader Reaction

"Just finished reading your latest edition of TMN, what an undertaking, and just wanted to say 'Great Job!' I enjoy reading the industry news as you present it. Thanks for your research, your writing style and for being willing to do sit down and do it."
From an e-mail of 2 March from Pete Lovegrove, of Woods Lithographics in Phoenix, Arizona.

"I wanted to thank you for your efforts with the TMN. I love, love, love it!!!! It's a wonderful way to keep informed on a larger scale."
From an e- mail of 3 March from Kim Casteel of the Sacramento, California Club.

"Enjoyed my first issue of TMN. Actually, I went to the website earlier and read a few previous editions. Just great."
From an e-mail of 5 March from Jean Paterson of IKON/Superior Reproductions in Vancouver, BC.

"Keep up the great work, your newsletter is the most up-to-date information I can get."
From an e-mail of 9 March from Chris Denison of Denison Print and the Conestogo Club in Breslau, Ontario.

Look For:

The all member mailing of the 1999 St. Louis Convention brochure coming to mail box near you.

Needed: YOUR HELP!

Okay, it's scratchy needle on a broken record time -- take a tiny peek at the calendar, gentle reader. It's International Gallery time. And we need you to set a goal to get those entries moving! From Jacksonville to LA; from the Capital District Club to the Des Moines Club to the Winnipeg Club we know there are entries trapped in someone's garage, office, back room, dog house, car park, etc., just waiting to escape to honor and victory.

Let your entries go forth and be fruitful! And maybe pick up some award hardware too!

As Dan Marantz said in his e-mailed Y'KNOW request he's already got commitments for 90 entries from North Jersey member firms; Richard Jones of LA has set a goal for his Club that will double their entry count from 1998.

It's time dear readers, let those entries fly!

Thank You!

Wow, 100 issues. That's pretty neat. And we couldn't have done it without you. Thanks very much!

That's All Folks!

Yours in Craftsmanship,

Kevin Keane IAPHC Minneapolis Minnesota
