By Kevin Keane, IAPHC CEO A Global Craftsmen Connection Long time readers of TMN may recall that last year we ran an item from a German student, Dirk Goetz, who was looking for an internship with a commercial printer in North America. Well, thanks to Winnipeg member Ike Braun of Friesens, Dirk commenced his internship in Winnipeg several weeks ago. We thank Ike for his generous commitment to global Sharing of Knowledge, and would also point out that when Jerry Bigalk of the Antelope Valley Club traveled to Germany for a family reunion last summer, he took time out of his schedule to meet with Dirk and explain what our Association is all about. TMN Goes Global too! This 101st issue of TMN is being read for the first time by graphic arts professionals in Britain and Australia and Germany. They join the avid readers all over North America and in places like Accra, Ghana in Africa, and Paris, France and Hong Kong. If you have a friend in the graphic arts located anywhere in the world, we would be happy to expose them to TMN and through TMN to the IAPHC, International Printing Week, the International Gallery of Superb Printing and Y'KNOW. Help us spread the Craftsmen movement won't you? Membership has its Privileges, Y'KNOW? We understand that intrinsic in e-mail communications, is the fact that any message can be forwarded again and again. Therefore, if you are receiving TMN on a virtual bounce, and aren't yet an IAPHC member, shouldn't you be? Contact us at the senders e-mail address above, as to how you too can join us in Sharing our Knowledge, globally. Ed Levy, membership maestro of the North Jersey Club sent us an e-mail on 10 March: "We will be inducting 14 new members at our meeting on March 11th, which will give us 60 new members so far this campaign. I am sure by the time I file my next membership report, we will be close to 70, with my personal (and fully supported by my fellow Club members) goal of 93 new members for this year." Go Ed Go! How does Ed do it? He asks! So we ask our readers, if you aren't an IAPHC member, wouldn't you like to become one? Ours is the most reasonably priced Association around in consideration of the kind of cutting edge information you can receive in TMN, through Y'KNOW and by virtue of the networking and friendly Sharing of Knowledge that occurs at each of our gatherings. So, we are hereby asking for your order! Dennis Gongwer, Columbus Club president sent us an e-mail on 11 March: "We had a tour of Flint Ink for our meeting tonite. We had 52 in attendance, 12 were students, 6 were guests and I inducted 7 new members from RIS Paper. Quite a night, it is my intention to be president of the largest Club in the Fifth District by May, I don't know if we can do it ... but it sure is a goal." Ray Lauria , president of the Mid-Hudson Graphic Arts Association sent us an e-mail on 12 March: "Had a great general membership meeting last night. Our guest speaker was a psychologist speaking about stress in the work place and our daily lives. None of us felt this topic was pertinent to the printing industry, but it sure resulted in a great turnout. We also had time to speak about the importance of membership in the IAPHC and its benefits. We inducted a new member, which only leaves us 2 to go to reach out membership goal set at the Convention in Rochester last August." Y'KNOW REQUESTS Your Knowledge Network Obviously Works (Y'KNOW?) - From Los Angeles member Susan Kinney, CEO of Castle Press in Pasadena, California: "Wanted -- Salesperson for Pasadena Sheetfed Printer. 67 year old printing company with design, production, imaging, computer to plate (Creo) computer to press (Xeikon), Heidelberg presses up to 40" 6 color, full bindery, mailing and distribution." Send resumes to susan@castlepress.com Ms. Kinney has given a tremendous amount to our industry by virtue of her commitment to the education of our young people as to career opportunities in the graphic arts. Her firm was also a first time entrant in the International Gallery of Superb Printing last year with an excellent (and Gold Award winning) digital printing entry. She has already indicated that she will be entering in 1999 as well! - From Sue Jordan, past president of the Albuquerque, New Mexico Club: "A printer I know here in Albuquerque wants to know where they can purchase a color-blind test to give to employees (press operators in particular) at the time of the interview. Does anyone out there know where we can find such test?" You can respond to Sue via e-mail at: theprintedimage@juno.com - From Gary Preston of the Columbus Club: "I am in need of a sheet counter that inserts tabs. Would like the type which rolls up to a pallet rather than the table top version." If you can help Gary, you can reach him via e-mail at gary.preston@rossnutrition.com or via phone at 614-624-4872. - From Francis X. Steck, Associate Professor, University of Wisconsin -Platteville: "Your TMN reaches so many people in the industry, perhaps you can help me find the technical expertise I need. A DS Screen 737 scanner and Scitex microWhisper I/O workstation were donated to our educational program by a Wisconsin printer. Scitex knows nothing about the scanner. Screen knows nothing about the workstation, and I know less about either! Is there someone out there using this equipment who's be willing to answer some technical questions about this specific configuration? We'd like to use it in a digital workflow as input into our Scitex workstation. I could use someone to fill in the 'gaps' in the documentation." Please reply directly via e-mail to steck@uwplatt.edu - From member Steve Jecha: "Are there any statisics or estimates as to how many sets of business cards are printed annually in the US? How about an estimate of how many 'in-plant' printing facilities? Do you know where I might be able to track down a statistic like that?" You can reply to Steve via e-mail at sjecha@digital-net.com - From Waterloo-Cedar Falls member Kelly Wels: "I am graduating in May with a marketing degree from the University of Northern Iowa, with a minor in Graphic Communications and will then be relocating to Colorado Springs. I am looking for any job leads our members might be able to pass my way. I can be reached via e-mail at welsk3254@uni.edu International Gallery News Ottawa is on the board! Our thanks to member Eric Kanstrup and the good folks at M.O.M. Printing in Ottawa for their continuing support for the International Gallery of Superb Printing, now in its 25th year of honoring excellence in the arts and sciences of printing. M.O.M. just submitted 15 entries. Portland is on the way! Bonnie Kelsch reports that 76 award winning pieces from the Portland Gallery are now on their merry way to the International Gallery. Capital District is enroute! Diana Feeney has lassoed 40 entries from Albany, New York area printing and graphic arts firms and has sent them winging towards International Gallery headquarters in Minneapolis. Now's the time to get your entries assembled and join the thousands of entries from every corner of the global graphic arts community dueling in the most economical competition around. If you need a Call for Entries just e-mail us at the address in the senders block above or call 800-466-4274 or fax 612-560-1350 and we will send you one immediately. Lisa Saul of Tukaiz Communications in Franklin Park, Illinois called today to request her copy of the Call for Entries -- she had seen a news release item in American Printer magazine. Closed circuit to our new International readers -- in recent years we have welcomed award winning entries from Australia, Britain, Hong Kong, Ireland, Korea, Switzerland and Russia. We sincerely hope that your company will be entering this wonderful event to show off your world class capabilities. 1999 IAPHC Sponsors Report We were delighted to receive the check from PrimeSource Corporation representing their second year as Sponsor of the International Gallery of Superb Printing Best of Show Award. We especially thank Fred Heinkel Sr. for his commitment to our Association on behalf of his fine company. We also received the check yesterday from Fuji Photo Film USA, representing their sponsorship of the Best Digital Printing Award in the 1999 International Gallery. We thank Tim Combs, of Fuji, for speeding his company's support our way. Thus far, we have received sponsorship fees from Neenah Paper, Finch, Pruyn Paper, PrimeSource Corporation and Fuji Photo Film USA; plus four other firms have formally committed to sponsorships in 1999. We are deeply grateful to these world class companies and the others that will soon be joining them. It is a wonderful thing to be able to celebrate the 25th International Gallery of Superb Printing and these sponsoring companies will make our Silver Gallery Anniversary even more special. More CASH-IN TO WIN! More and more members are returning their CASH-IN TO WIN tickets. This week we have seen Steve Conard from the Mid-Kansas and Wichita Clubs buy 2; and also have new participants like member Jason Chodorowski; Taffy Woods and Dave Parker of Los Angeles; Cindy Johnson of Waterloo-Cedar Falls; Bob Mills of Santa Monica Bay; Bill Bechhold of the London, Ontario Club. Thanks to all the folks who are taking a flyer on CASH-IN TO WIN! Calling all Recipes OK people, remind me. Don't let me forget. The Sierra Nevada Club is looking for recipe submissions for a cook book fund raiser that will help defray expenses for the 81st IAPHC Convention to be held in Reno, Nevada in August of 2000. I can't forget. I have an unwritten recipe known as "Kevbo's famous bachelor (don't look) Toadstools (a.k.a. mushrooms for the uncool)" But I gotta write it down or Bill and Marjie and Mike and Pam and Sharon and Jeff and Patti and Cindy are going to really be upset with me. Remind me please! Recipes need to be submitted ASAP to Pam Goin, Cook Book Chair, at Palmer's Laminating 1360 Greg St, Suite 104, Sparks Nevada 89431-6074 USA. Thanks to all you culinary types! Reader Reaction to 100 TMN's - From Craig Kevghas, of CPR Marketing in an e-mail of 10 March: "Kevin -- you're quickly becoming one of the most informed and timely information sources in the industry. Great job. I look forward to your e-mail every Tuesday." - From Madison Area Club member Wayne Dohse in an e-mail of 10 March: "Thanks again for the informative newsletter. It is very good reading. Needed a tool like this for our organization for years." - From Richard Schiding, CEO of Progressive Information Technologies in Emigsville, Pennsylvania in an e-mail of 10 March: "Congratulations on your 100th issue of TMN. Your coverage of Seybold in Boston was great. I picked up some things from you that I missed in my two days at the show. I look forward to receiving every TMN." - From Vincent Hempsall, Associate Editor Canadian Printer magazine in an e-mail of 11 March: "Really enjoyed this week's newsletter. It's by far one of the best ones I've read ... and in this job, I tend to have to read a lot." - From Jean-Guy Alarie of the Montreal Club in an e-mail of 12 March: "You wrote thanks for reading it, I say thanks for doing it. Congratulations for a job well done." Note Bene: Do you know what Richard Schiding's company Progressive Information Technologies in Emigsville PA does? We didn't either. So we asked: "We are a prepress/prepublishing company that specializes in servicing textbook publishers. College, Medical, High School and Professional & Reference books are the bulk of our business. We do mostly four color and two color books and our end product these days is PostScript files which go to the printer. We also have a new media department which does CD-ROM development for the same markets and also Internet work. Lastly, we have a database software development department and our flagship product is a Content Management Software package called TARGET 2000. We license this to companies who publish material in multiple mediums including print, CD and Internet. Major customers using this software include McGraw Hill, W.B. Saunders Medical, IEEE, Random House and some major drug companies. Our web page is www.pit-magnus.com That's All Folks! Yours in Craftsmanship, Kevin Keane IAPHC Minneapolis Minnesota |
