By Kevin Keane, IAPHC CEO Human Interest Tales "Dear Kevin, thank you for putting me on your list. I have to say thank you, because I have got the chance to come to Canada through your Tuesday Morning News. I like it very much here (in Winnipeg, Manitoba). Friesens is a good company." From an e-mail of 19 March, from Dirk Goetz of Stuttgart, Germany who is embarked upon an active internship and learning experience at Friesens. 12th District Governor Bill Leahy of Los Angeles had an opportunity to attend his son's graduation ceremonies at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station recently. Afterwards, the proud father was driving down the road and noticed a sign for Weakley Fine Printing. On a whim, he stopped in and after introductions made a pitch for Craftsmen membership. Turns out the current proprietor is the son of a charter member of the North Shore Club, and promptly gave Bill directions to Jobs Printing and Mailing, home of past IAPHC President Caesar Fontana and now being ably run by Caesar's daughter Kathy Fontana. Small world this global market of ours. Membership Value a guest editorial by IAPHC Vice-Chairman Tony Sarubbi IAPHC Membership remains the best value in the graphic arts. With all the changes in our industry over the past dozen years, the need for continuing education in our industry is atop every owner's list. With downsizing, cutbacks, and mergers, more and more of our workers are wearing hats they never had to don before. And with the additional hats, comes more time at the plant or office leaving less time for education. The Craftsmen Club is one way or possibly the only way in some areas, to stay abreast of our industry. No matter how busy someone may be, three hours a month is a small investment to make in exchange for the knowledge the IAPHC has to offer. Is it difficult to bring in new members? Most would say yes. Yet I disagree. We should ask some basic questions about our membership recruitment efforts. Have we offered an incentive program? Do we treat our guests as special guests when they come to a meeting? Are we organized in our presentation so that a guest learns about the history and scope and mission of the IAPHC? Do we run informational ads in our bulletins or have handouts explaining the Three Levels of Craftsmanship as penned by my wife and fellow member Frieda Sarubbi? Most importantly do we ASK for the order by asking someone to join our group? It's not really a hard sell. Just ask Ed Levy in North Jersey, or Lou Woods in Des Moines, or Richard Jones in Los Angeles. (Ed Levy reported this morning that he is up to 62 new members so far the year!) Just think, we can sell the history and tradition of International Printing Week; the marketing sizzle of the International Gallery of Superb Printing; the unbelievable business building power of the Knowledge Network; the cutting edge reports of Tuesday Morning News; and the personal development inherent in belonging to one of our Clubs. Wow! That's a lot of bang for the buck! Try asking a co-worker, a supplier, an associate in your city who works in our industry to come take a look at all we have to offer. I truly believe that the IAPHC is the most important part of my professional day, just as I felt after my first meeting in 1981. You must show enthusiasm, belief and passion when you talk about our Association. We all need to bring new members to the table. Start this week, your Club needs you to get involved! IAPHC Membership Drive Just a quick word about a short term membership drive now in effect. If you recruit a new member and that member's name is properly reported to IAPHC Headquarters by June 30, 1999, your name will go into the hat for each time you recruit a new member. Bring in five new members, you have five chances to win. First prize is $300 US, second prize is $200 US. Drawing of the winners to take place during the 80th Annual Convention in St. Louis, Missouri in August of this year. Winners need not be present to win. Fill up that hat! Y'KNOW Requests Your Knowledge Network Obviously Works (Y'KNOW?) Winnipeg Club member Ike Braun at Friesens Corporation would like to know what kind of preventive maintenance programs other printers have established for Prepress, Press and Bindery equipment. If you are willing to share some information please contact Ike via e-mail at Ikeb@friesens.com East Bay Club member David Cain asks: "I'm a regular reader, and I enjoy the information you share. Was wondering whether a particular internet technology could be used in the printing/paper industry: a site known as www.metaexchange.com allows buyers and sellers of commodity type goods to trade online. The exchange technology is much more efficient than the presently popular auction systems (auctions don't close for days, you may not win, etc) Are there any commodity type goods in the printing/paper industry that could benefit from this technology? Would pulp producers be interested in buying and selling paper over the Internet?" If you have any feedback for Dave he can be reached via e-mail at davecain@compuserve.com - From Madison Area Club member Tim Terry of Terry Printing in Janesville, Wisconsin: "I am in need of information for process printing on rigid plastic. I have had ink draw downs completed at Flint Ink with good drying results. The problems seem to arise when the trapping process occurs. We are attempting to run this on a Heidelberg MOF with Alcolor. Any information is welcome." You can reach Tim via e-mail at timterry@terryprinting.com - From soon to be new graduate Shayla Neal: "I am looking for any positions open for May 1999 graduates in the Communication Technologies Management field. Am willing to relocate." Please contact Shayla via e-mail at shaylaneal@excite.com We have two blind requests, and would like to emphasize that blind requests are placed at the behest of the sender. No one's privacy will be compromised, and confidentiality of both sender and any replying members will be observed. "I am looking for a converter to do a Cash Back Bank Envelope. Size is 7 7/8" long and 3 1/2" wide with a 1 1/4 " self glue flap. We can print and send to the converter or the converter can print. It prints in 1 color. Order would be for 1 million per month. Prefer Mid-West US." "Interested in speaking with any large web printers located in North East region of the US that may be open to sending bindery, poly bagging, ink jet mail, perfect bindery, saddle stitch etc into Canada to take advantage of excellent service and the current advantageous exchange rates. Please advise in confidence." If you would like to reply to either of these blind requests, please let us know and we will forward your inquiry to the appropriate party. Replies should be sent to kkeane1069@aol.com Thank You! International Gallery News Our sincere thanks to Dave Albrecht of the Mid-Hudson Club for his persistence in shepherding through the budget process at his company, a proposal to become a International Gallery of Superb Printing sponsor for 1999. It gives us a great deal of pleasure to welcome GretagMacbeth as our newest sponsor, joining Prime Source Corporation, Neenah Paper, Fuji Photo Film USA, Finch, Pruyn and others still to come. These fine companies are determined to help assure that the 25th Anniversary Gallery is the best ever. If you work for a company that would like to learn more about sponsorship opportunities, please let us know. Contact the writer at kkeane1069@aol.com and a packet outlining the sponsorship benefits to your firm will be sent off post haste. Meanwhile, the rising tide of International Gallery entries begins in earnest. The 76 entries from Portland, Oregon area printers arrived in fine shape. Debbie Pfaffl at Multi-Craft Litho in Newport, Kentucky sent five great looking entries, she is one of a number of rising women CEO's in our industry and we have appreciated her support in past International Gallery competitions as well. The good folks at Enteron Group in Chicago have been supporting the event for the past several years by entering world class calendar projects and they have entered again just today, as did Terri Ann Faychild of Ben Franklin Press in Napa, California, whose wine label projects have always been beautiful to behold. In both of these latter examples we have also been able to obtain e-mail addresses, (there's a line on the International Gallery Call for Entries form) so we are welcoming two members to their first issue of TMN. We also heard from Ken Wensley of the Adirondack Club who has been pleasantly surprised by even more entries from his Club members in upstate New York. So, if you have been waiting to send along your entries, now's the time! And if you are reading TMN for the first time and would like to know more about the International Gallery of Superb Printing, give us a ring at 800-466-4274 or send this writer an e-mail. We will be happy to send a Free copy of the Call for Entries to anyone, anywhere in the world. CASH-IN TO WIN!
