Club Blurbs

- From Des Moines, Iowa, a group of Des Moines area printers is set to attack the problem of attracting qualified employees to the graphic arts. A kick-off meeting is set for 8 April at Acme Printing in Des Moines. The group already has a Mission Statement: "To strengthen the work force of the graphic communications industry by providing an ongoing alliance of businesses and educators. This will be achieved by supporting industry promotion, establishing and maintaining educational programs that meet industry needs, and strong industry input of necessary resources."

- From Vancouver, British Columbia: "The result of the 10th District Conference Cruise Raffle of a cabin on board the Sun Princess cruise ship, May 13-17, 1999 was held on Wednesday 24 March. The winning ticket (drawn by Steve Fehr of Adobe Systems) was purchased by George Michaels of West-Pro Graphics in Vancouver. Congratulations go to George; and the Vancouver Club extends grateful thanks to all who participated in this fund raising event."

Got Travel Plans?

Past IAPHC President Dan Cowan has kindly offered to contribute a handsome slice of travel agency commission dollars to the Platinum Reserve Fund. Dan has an interest in an agency in Florida that has been used by IAPHC members in the past to book travel arrangements. If you elect to use Accent Travel please identify yourself as a Craftsmen member. Any questions may be directed to Dan via e-mail at dancowan@accenttravelworld.com

News from Cal Poly

Dr. Harvey Levenson reports that it has been a good year for the Cal Poly Graphic Communications Department. We reported in a January edition of TMN the great program Cal Poly had lined up to celebrate International Printing Week. Subsequently, the Department has been the grateful recipient of some very special donations including a Creo TrendSetter 3244, Newsprint from the Smurfit Newsprint Corporation and a copy of the Programmed Solutions Printing Management software.

Y'KNOW Requests

Your Knowledge Network Obviously Works (Y'KNOW?)

- From Montreal Club member Jean-Guy Alarie: "Thanks again for your good work. One of my friends is working for a few months in a printing plant as a consultant for a Canadian non-profit organisation (SACO) in the Dominican Republic. They have no Spanish documentation about offset techniques nor about operation of Roland sheetfed presses. Would anyone be able to send me information so I can help my friend perform his job?" Jean-Guy can be reached via e-mail at ala@mlink.net

(Editor's note -- we also asked Jean-Guy if his friend would be willing to suggest to the owners of the printing plant that they enter the International Gallery. As his friend, Nelson Tousignant had been an active member of the Entries Comite in Montreal for many years, a happy confluence of circumstance may result in some first time entries from the Dominican Republic!)

- From Traci Biolo, a graphic designer at Quality Plus Printing, a Central Wisconsin Club member: "I am looking for any seminars on Quark XPress. I would like to find a one or two day program, preferably in Wisconsin." You can reach Traci via e-mail at qppinc@wctc.net

- From Mid-Hudson Club member Susan MacDonald: "I am currently seeking employment in Corporate Graphics/Public Relations. I am willing to relocate (preferably to CA or MA), but will consider other areas. I hold a BA degree, am bi-lingual, and have training in most Macintosh graphic arts applications." Interested parties can e-mail Susan at awsem1@worldnet.att.net

International Gallery News

First off, we would like to cordially invite any reader to consider being a judge in this year's 25th Anniversary of the International Gallery of Superb Printing. As Dan Marantz of the North Jersey Club said last year: "It was probably the most amazing experience of my involvement with Craftsmanship." The dates are June 16, 17, 18 and winding up with the Best of the Best judging on June 19, 1999. The judging takes place here in Minneapolis. If you are interested in participating for one or more days, just give us a shout.

Second, we want to take a moment to give a hearty slap on the back to our Gallery Guru of the Cincinnati Club -- Fifth District Deputy Governor Bob Schneider, who, to put it succinctly, GETS IT! Bob is one member who clearly understands that the International Gallery is one tremendous opportunity for the IAPHC to broaden its awareness and prestige in the global graphic arts community.

On Thursday 26 March, 50 entries arrived from Landoll's. Bob facilitates those entries simply by encouraging the firm to support the competition, plus it can turn out to be good for his business in sales for Muller Martini. The same day Bob sent this e-mail: "I was at Broudy Printing in Pittsburgh and they will be sending some entries. I also was in Erie at a customer --Printing Concepts -- and they might send in some entries. I'm also encouraging Heeter Printing in Pittsburgh and Boolmasters in Ashland Ohio." The next day Bob wrote: "I stopped at T.L. Krieg, the Cincinnati firm our Club recognized as Company of the Year and I think they will enter some pieces." Our sincere thanks to Bob for his efforts, which don't require a hard sell and can be so beneficial to the entering company.

Third, we want to thank Colin Campbell, London, Ontario Club President for sending in today some very snazzy labels we will use to celebrate and further personalize the 25th Anniversary International Gallery Award winner certificates.

We also received an entry from a first time entrant -- Phibbs Incorporated in St. Thomas, Ontario; and we heard from Fortran Printing in Cleveland Ohio and Classic Graphics in Charlotte North Carolina that they will be first time entrants as well.

Cindy Thomas called from the Sierra-Nevada Club in Reno, Nevada to report that 56 pieces will be shipping this week, and Chris Kerlick called from the St. Louis Club to report that 55 pieces will be forthcoming from his Club. Sixteen firms in Nebraska will receive special invitations to participate in the Silver Anniversary Gallery thanks to Paula Steenson of the Omaha Club.

Obviously many entries are being prepared all over the world. However, we would really appreciate it if you would take one second as you are reading this newsletter and ask yourself "Shouldn't my company be involved in this event?" And if your answer is yes, then let's get you entered ASAP!

Board Gift Idea

If you are a soon to be retiring Club President looking for a suitable item of Craftsmen related merchandise to present to the nice folks who worked so hard with you this past year, may we suggest a very utilitarian item that allows your Board members to show their Craftsmen colors and get good use of the item simultaneously? How about a Craftsmen briefcase, black vinyl, sturdy cloth handles, red logo on one side, and a real work horse as we carry one every day. The briefcase sells for $10. US.

Yours in Craftsmanship,

Kevin Keane IAPHC Minneapolis Minnesota
