By Kevin Keane, IAPHC CEO Gutenberg Reminder If you are attending the Gutenberg Festival later this week, don't forget to drop by the 12th District booth which has been graciously provided by Los Angeles Club member Chris Jacobson, president of Gutenberg Expositions. Numerous members of the 12th District will be there promoting Craftsmen membership and soliciting International Gallery entries. The managers of the Gutenberg have worked hard to present a great show in this pre-drupa year, we hope you will support their efforts as they support ours. Thanks for the Memories Marj! The Eleventh District Spring Conference was held this past weekend and the unsinkable Marjie Swiatek retired as 11th District Governor with a distinguished and often fun and relevant career to reflect upon. Marjie will be missed on the IAPHC Board but she is already up to her eyeballs in helping to plan the 2000 Convention to be held in Reno, Nevada. Don Landers has assumed the mantle of leadership in the 11th and what's this we hear about nuptials and a honeymoon in Ireland? Can we be the porter to show you the best pubs for a well poured pint o' porter Donal me boyo? The real JIM DALLAS address is not in Texas If your club is participating in the Club Bulletin contest (6 copies of 6 issues by the 6th day of the 6th month ie June 6th, 1999!) Jim would like to give you his correct ship to address which is 4650 Auburn Folsom Road, Loomis California 95650. San Francisco Club Hosts Russian Entrepreneurs A delegation of Russian graphic arts company owners was recently treated to a wonderfully educational visit to the City by the Bay. First stop was an all day tour coordinated by Vladislav Gites at Waller Press/Walker Media in South San Francisco. One of the Russian visitor's described the visit as akin to walking into a 'Star Wars' set. The next day there was a lively presentation on digital prepress held at Printing Industries of Northern California. Club members Liana King and John Madden were among the presenters. The following day past IAPHC President Gordon Lindstrom was the gracious host at his firm, Gordon Graphics in Ignacio, California which was then followed up by a visit to Paris Printing. The Russian delegations visit was sponsored by the Novato Rotary Club and the Center of Citizens Initiatives Productivity Enhancement Program headquartered at the Presidio in San Francisco. LA Gets Heidelbergized Los Angeles Club President Richard Jones filed the following report: On 21 April over 160 people attended the Los Angeles Club's monthly meeting held at the Heidelberg USA demonstration center in Rancho Domiguez. Two months prior to the event, invitations were sent to local high school and college instructors inviting them and their students to attend. Because the S.A.M Club (Students at Meetings) the LA Club reduced the usual $5.00 fee to a free evening of tours, demonstrations and a western style buffet. There were 81 students and teachers in attendance. They included Fullerton College, Los Angeles Trade Tech College, Don Bosco Technical School, Cal State Los Angeles and Pasadena City College as well as area high schools. Club members from Antelope Valley and Santa Monica Bay joined forces to make this the largest draw of attendees in ten years. Special thanks to Heidelberg's Gary Meinke, regional VP, Carl Ferolie, CTP Sales Specialist, and Randy Guiboa and Steven Scholl lead demonstrators. Got Gallery ??? May 15th is the nominal deadline for entries to the International Gallery of Superb Printing marking its 25th Anniversary year in 1999. As of this writing, we really have no idea how large the International Gallery will be this year. We do know we have entries from as far afield as Accra, Ghana, West Africa and The New Territories, Hong Kong; and entries from repeat entrants, and first time entrants and even non-member entrants. We have new sponsors and repeat sponsors. Kohl and Madden is the newest sponsor thanks to Len Vadala of the North Jersey Club. And we will be adding still more sponsors in the next few weeks. We have first time judges coming from the Hamilton Club and the Grand Rapids Club and the Diablo Club and the Redwood Empire Club. And repeat judges from Milwaukee and Madison and North Jersey. To mark the 25th Anniversary International Gallery we have arranged for special commemorative award certificates and will be preparing special Best of the Best awards as well. So gentle reader, NOW is the time to participate and revel in the knowledge that you helped make the Silver Anniversary Gallery the best ever. Don't delay, do it right now! If you need a Call for Entries just call us at 800-466-4274 or fax at 612-560-1350 or e-mail the writer. PS the definition of the nominal deadline is that deadline which is published while the double secret final, final deadline remains unpublished. Got it? ie, if you got Gallery, we got time to make you a star! Mike Lane Kudos Mike Lane, the long time Seattle Club member who oversaw the delightful 1997 Convention in the Emerald City, has had a pretty nice year. He was named a Life Member of the Kiwanis International, a rare honor indeed. More recently, and perhaps in recognition of his development of his business Tabs Plus, James Burn International, a manufacturer of plate punches and wire-o binding equipment asked Mike to serve on the company's Advisory Board.
