Club and IAPHC News
By Kevin Keane, IAPHC CEO

District Conference News

You can look for full reports on several of the recent IAPHC District Conferences in the fourth issue of the IAPHC Communicator which is now being assembled by Walt Herip of the Akron Club. Recent events included the Tenth District Conference aboard the Sun Princess cruise ship and the Fifth District Conference on historic Mackinaw Island. The respective festivities were put together by the Vancouver and Lansing Clubs and all who attended offered nothing but accolades for the facilities, the programs and the fellowship.

Your Knowledge Network Obviously Works (Y'KNOW?)

There are many Knowledge Network requests that never make the pages of Tuesday Morning News because the need is too immediate. In recent days, Heinz Hofmann of the Diablo Club inquired looking for a source for Buntner Posts for a hot stamping press and received a reply within the hour from Milt Vine of the Seattle Club; and North Shore member Larry DeVera's need for a specific size of screw posts for a binder was answered the following morning by Steve Koontz of the Seattle Club; and when Lauren Sisto also of the Seattle Club needed a printer for a job sized 30 x 80" we were able to instantly steer her towards Superior Lithographics in Los Angeles thanks to their entries in the 1998 International Gallery. This kind of specific, speedy response is of enormous value to the individual member needing help at that moment.

Today we have two requests:

- From Bob Bayless of Puget Bindery and the Seattle Club: "I am in search of a 'Clete sewing machine.' They are no longer manufactured. So I am hoping that the network can help me find one in good working order that someone wishes to get rid of." You can reach Bob via e-mail at rbayless@halcyon.com or via phone at 253.872.5707.

- From LB Crispin of the Lansing Club: "I am looking for someone who does blister packaging. Would like to find someone in Michigan that does this process or someone close to Michigan." You can reach LB via e-mail at pibox@mich.com

By the way, Larry DeVera's company, which among other things, designs cool new restaurant menus, has just gone online at www.associatesdesign.com Check it out and let Larry know what you think at DeVeraLR@aol.com

Congratulations!

Our best wishes to the following members who have received special distinction and honors in recent days -- John Power of the Vancouver Club was named Tenth District Craftsman of the Year; Donna Duval was selected Craftsman of the Year by the Seattle Club; Twin City member Dale Beane was named Franchisee of the Year by the Insty-Prints franchise organization; and Dennis Gongwer was the speechless recipient of the Eric G. Sturton Award at the Fifth District Conference.

Each of these honors is the highest one bestowed by the various organizations mentioned. It is our pleasure to know each of these fine individuals and to attest that in every case, no more deserving person could be found.

St. Louis Convention Reminder

More and more IAPHC members are registering for the 80th Annual IAPHC Convention to be held at the Hyatt Regency Union Station in downtown St. Louis August 7-10, 1999. For planning purposes the Convention coordinating team would like to get a handle on how many people will be attending. If you intend to be there, please send in your registration ASAP. Don't forget that the hotel room rate will dramatically escalate in price on July 15, 1999. Book your rooms now! (314.923.3970). If you need us to fax you information about registering for the Convention please just say the word.

Also, don't forget that if you have items to donate for the International Gallery of Superb Printing Awards Auction designed to benefit the Graphic Arts Literacy Alliance (G.A.L.A.) in its ongoing efforts to eradicate the scourge of illiteracy , please set those items aside now. If you have any questions about the convention or about the St. Louis area, please feel free to call Paula Steenson, Convention Coordinator at 402-346-3950 or Chris Kerlick the purportedly "retired" commissar of St. Louis at 314-652-6020.

International Gallery News

Entry Deadline

Today's deliveries included 17 from Vectra Corporation and 10 more from St. Louis area printers and an enormous skid containing hundreds of entries from Montreal area printers. There is still time to help assure the largest most successful International Gallery of Superb Printing ever. The final, final double secret deadline is June 15, 1999 for receipt of entries at International Gallery Headquarters in Minneapolis. Every entry matters, and we need your help!

Sponsor Roster

Our roster of sponsoring companies continues to grow as well. Cheri Karch, Corporate Relations Director at Worzalla sent along a lovely letter with her firm's sponsorship check: "Worzalla is again honored to sponsor a Best of the Best Award in the 1999 International Gallery of Superb Printing competition, we have increased the amount and our check is enclosed. We would like to continue calling the award The Frank C. Anderko/WORZALLA Best Book Award."

Today's mail brought the $5,000 sponsorship check from Kodak Polychrome Graphics for the Best Use of Emerging Technologies Award and today we had a wonderful chat with Mr. Joe Casper, Vice President of Kohl & Madden who agreed to sponsor the Best Use of Ink Award.

Top Five Reasons to Go Gallery

All IAPHC members received an e-mail late last week extolling the Top Five Reasons to Enter Gallery. John Kohnke, past president of the San Francisco Club of Litho and Printing House Craftsmen sent along his own eloquent testimonial of an additional reason to enter:

"As you know, I participate heavily in the Gallery of Superb Printing, entering pieces, acting as a judge and even attending other local Club competitions. I find seeing and reviewing these pieces to be of immense value in broadening my market knowledge of what can be and has been done. Recently, a client had a vague idea of a project they wanted to do, but they needed some direction. My memory quickly flashed back to an entry I saw at another Club some year's back and immediately went to work on a comp based upon that design concept. My experience with the Gallery of Superb Printing resulted in a print order worth over $100,000. I think that might be able to pay for an entry or two, not to mention my membership dues for a couple of years!"

Van Hanswyk Jasser Award

Each year at the Annual Convention, the IAPHC presents a deserving individual with the Van Hanswyk Jasser Award which is awarded to that person who best represents the necessary and essential bridge between industry and education in assuring the success of the Graphic Arts in future generations. The deadline for nominations is June 30, 1999. Any member can nominate a candidate. We would be happy to fax a nomination form to anyone who requests one.

Job Connection

- From time to time, we are asked to post ads for members in search of new opportunities.

A blind request for a member in Michigan: Lots of hands on experience in sales, complete familiarity with all aspects of graphic arts, prefer sales position located in the State. If you would like to receive a copy of this member's resume please send an e-mail to kkeane1069@aol.com and we will hook up the two parties.

- From Susan MacDonald of the Mid-Hudson Club: I am interested in obtaining a permanent full time position in the area of Graphic Arts/Corporate Communications. I have talent in traditional arts, and that is what led me to pursue coursework in Computer Graphic Arts. I would be willing to relocate and would love an opportunity in either the San Diego or Boston markets, but of course I am willing to consider all possibilities. I would be happy to provide resume information to any one who inquires. Thank you! I can be reached via e-mail at awsem1@worldnet.att.net

Giving Back

Our closing item today, is one that asks you to think about your station in life. Member Ralph Moreman heads up operational activities at Current, Inc., in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He wonders if, in a time of plenty for much of the graphic arts industry, it isn't time to discuss a 'volunteer corps of printing craftsmen.' This group would seek to spread its printing knowledge globally in those regions where economic or political strictures have held back the development of the craft. Ralph says he knows that other crafts have begun similar programs, i.e., plumbers who travel to third world nations drilling and installing fresh water wells.

If you would like to correspond with Ralph about this noble idea, he can be reached via e-mail at rcmoreman@currentinc.com

That's All Folks!

Yours in Craftsmanship,

Kevin Keane IAPHC Minneapolis Minnesota
