NAPL Joins in the Promotion of International Printing Week

- From New York Club member in good standing and long time head honcho of the National Association for Printing Leadership (NAPL) Gregg Van Wert:

"As a 30 year member of the International Association of Printing House Craftsmen, I'm particularly pleased to announce that NAPL will join the IAPHC in sponsorship of International Printing Week, January 16-22, 2000. First observed by the IAPHC over 50 years ago, International Printing Week has become a tradition that is widely celebrated by Craftsmen Clubs. Linking NAPL to Printing Week events is expected to add credibility to this annual celebration of print. It will also do much to create awareness of NAPL throughout the IAPHC. (See article on pages 24/25 of our current Printing Manager Magazine."

International Printing Week Chair, Dr. John Leininger secured the support of the NAPL and has also made available the printing of the IPW posters designed by Seattle Club member Karen Schuetz. John will begin shipping posters over the next few weeks.

Montreal GALA

The Montreal Club celebrated yet another fabulous GALA event on 29 October. This is the event, widely attended by a veritable "Who's Who" list of the graphic arts community in Montreal and throughout Quebec, at which the Montreal Club presents the several hundred International Gallery of Superb Printing awards garnered each year by the world class printers of Montreal. IAPHC Vice-Chairman Ray Rafalowski and International Gallery Co-Chair Dan Marantz are the latest stateside visitors to be blown away by this incredible celebration. Our hats have been off to our good friends in Montreal for many years for having taught us the powerful potential of the International Gallery, and once again we doff our chapeaus in gratitude.

Grand Gans Gala

The 12th District feted a grand Craftsman Mr. Robert Gans, founder of Gans Ink and godfather of more than one Craftsmen's Club on October 6. It was a very well attended event, and a very busy night of awards and honors as well as a chance to celebrate the remarkable dedication of Mr. Gans to this industry. We salute him and wish him many more such evenings.

Central Minnesota: Don't take 'em for Granite!

The Central Minnesota Club of Printing Professionals had 141 people from across the central region attend an all day series of seminars on October 25th. These were 'pay-per-view' seminars, proving that Knowledge Sharing remains valuable. Unfortunately, the day was marred by some bald headed guy from Minneapolis who gave a raucous Graph Expo report to the luncheon throng.

Look For:

The first issue of the 1999-2000 series of IAPHC Communicator which was expertly designed by Norm Belanger of the Calgary Club and beautifully printed by Walter Gutowski, Jr at Swift Printing in Grand Rapids, Michigan and was mailed from Grand Rapids on October 20.

Y'KNOW REQUESTS

Every time we post a request for help from an IAPHC member we are astounded by the speed and accuracy of the replies. After the last issue of TMN, Milt Vine of the Seattle Club, and John Kohnke of the San Francisco Club, and Amy McCarthy of the Syracuse Club, and Lamar Hughes of the Seattle Club all provided marvelous assistance to a fellow member located a continent away. Proving once again that:

Your Knowledge Network Obviously Works, Y'KNOW?

- From Jaci Jones of the Cincinnati Club: "I have a customer looking to print game boards, any ideas?" You can contact Jaci via e-mail at mikenjaci@fuse.net

- From Buddy Jones of the Richmond Club: "I have a friend in need of a 'Southworth' corner cutter. Anyone know of someone who would have one for sale?" You can contact Buddy at bjones@jwfergusson.com

- From Jeff Mayer of the Mid-Hudson Club: "A client is looking for a printer in the package/label sector who has a 4-6 color 40" press with a coater that runs UV inks with curing between units. The stock is 70# C1S silver foil litho and the application of the label is on a water bottle. I would like to keep this in the Craftsmen 'family', so your help getting it out to the Knowledge Network would be most appreciated." Jeff can be reached via e-mail at JPMayer@aol.com

- From Colin Campbell of the London Club: "I am looking for a US supplier of Polymer Plate Material. I need the following product only. Miraclon MA-175 -A4 (size)." Please respond to Colin Campbell c/o thlabels@netcom.ca or campbell@gtn.net

- From Karen Woolley MAL from far North Ontario: "Looking for some expert opinions comparing gravure versus web rotary offset. We need continuous feed (roll) for our machines on the packaging line. The print runs average per SKU 130,000 impressions run every 2 months. Width is 326mm (rolls) average cutoff 300mm. Substrate is presently a bleached stainless paper which gets, in one pass, an extruded layer of polyethylene and metalacine. We are looking for flexibility to change our graphics more often. The cost of the gravure cylinders makes this prohibitive. A design agency recommended looking at web litho. Can any one help?" You can contact Karen via e-mail at kwoolley@quakerca.com

- From Gwen Slack of the Kansas City Club: "We are considering offering rubber stamps to our customers (we are a wholesale thermographer). We would like to talk to fellow members who may be able to give us some information or provide sources for information or equipment. Any info you can provide would be appreciated." Contact Gwen at 913/831/0304.
