Club and IAPHC News
By Kevin Keane, IAPHC CEO

Platinum Reserve

The IAPHC's Platinum Reserve Fund continues its growth, with the latest contribution from Cheryl Adams of the Erie Club pushing the fund's total assets over another landmark. Plans are in the works to achieve more fund raising goals in the near future.

In Memorium

We would like to offer our respects and sincere condolences to the families and friends of these great Craftsmen who have recently passed away:

Mr. Roy Gurney, past president of the IAPHC, serving in the year 1962-1963. Mr. Gurney was a member of the Toronto Club. Roy had many friends in both the Toronto Club and as the result of his travels around the Association.

Mr. Robert Decker, Sr. Bob was a past president of the Syracuse Club and along with his son Bobby, had helped define Craftsmanship as encompassing photography as well.

Mr. Val Johnson. Val was past president of the Rochester Club, and as a long time RIT staff member was instrumental in the success of the 1998 IAPHC Convention in Rochester, New York.

Best Wishes

We also have learned that good friends Jerry Carter and Joe Shea of the Indianapolis Club and Bernice Bechhold, wife of revered London Club member Bill Bechhold have each been under a Doctor's care in recent weeks, and we hope for only good things for each one of them.

Your Knowledge Network Obviously Works (Y'KNOW?)

The speed and the reach of the Knowledge Network continues to amaze. In the last issue of TMN, we posted a request from Dennis Gongwer, president of the Columbus Club. Within a day, we were able to pass along replies from Ron Shook, a member of the Portland, Oregon Club and from Lea Smith, another member of the Columbus Club. Y'KNOW really works. It's global, not merely local. Its expertise specific. And it's fast. Really fast!

- From Ken Weisenberger of the Central Minnesota Club:

"I am looking for any written comparisons of the Xeikon versus the Indigo. I have a customer going into on-demand printing and they are debating the differences between the two. I am simply trying to find them an impartial view. Thanks for your help!" Ken can be reached via e-mail at WeisenbergerK@kpgraphics.com

- From LB Crispin of the Lansing Club:

"Need to find someone who prints on 20mil plastic and can die cut plastic. Black, Green on White.... or this might be a three color job on clear plastic. There is a bleed. There are 3000 each of 3 tabs. Size of card is 2 5/8 x 4 1/8 this includes the tab." LB can be reached at pibox@voyager.net

- From member-at-large John Zbaren:

"I am looking for information on any online buying services especially any specializing in direct mail. I seem to recall one based in Washington state. Thanks for any help you can give me." You can reach John at jzbaren@email.msn.com

- From Dan Marantz of the North Jersey Club:

"I have a customer who has a 2000 + page book that I print. They would like to have the book put on CD with some sort of indexing capability. The entire book is on disk currently and is updated twice a year. They would need around 500 CD's.

I also have a friend who has written three different works, one short story fiction, one fiction, and one autobiographical, about learning her husband had been diagnosed with AIDS. She would like to find a publisher. If anyone could help with either of these items it would be much appreciated. Thanks!" You can reach Dan via e-mail at DMarantz@aol.com

Gutenberg Awards

The IAPHC is the co-sponsor along with the IGAEA, of the 12th Annual Gutenberg Awards, a student graphic arts contest. Mike Stinnett of the Detroit Club is the long time co-ordinator of the Gutenberg Awards and he now has available the Entry Forms. Mike has provided us with a large quantity of the Awards and we would be happy to ship a supply to any educator who would like to encourage students to enter this fine competition. Just let us know how many you would like and we will mail them pronto.

International Printing Week

Just another reminder that International Printing Week is rapidly approaching. The celebrations will take place all over the world during the week of January 16-22, 2000. Each Club president should have received a quantity of the IPW poster. If you did not get any posters, please e-mail Dr. John Leininger, International Printing Week chair at ljohn@clemson.edu

IAPHC Mid-Winter

Also a reminder about the IAPHC Mid-Winter Board Meeting to be held in Las Vegas at the Stardust Resort and Casino, February 4, 5 and 6, 2000. You may register to attend the Mid-Year meeting by phoning or faxing or e-mailing IAPHC Headquarters. There is a $35 (US) Registration Fee per member or guest attending, to offset catering costs. ($50 US is the fee at the door.) Deadline for payment of Registration Fees is January 26th, 2000. To make your room reservations, please phone the Stardust at 800-634-6757, ask for the Convention Desk and identify yourself as with group IAPHC00. Please note that your credit card will be charged for one nights stay minimum. Room rates are $60 net (Sunday through Thursday) and $100 net (Friday and Saturday). Everyone is most cordially welcome.

Great Gallery Holiday Gift Idea

Dear 1999 International Gallery of Superb Printing Award winner. Are you searching for the perfect Holiday gift for your clients?

It isn't easy today, when some firms have policies forbidding personal gifts; when our society has become much more diverse in religious traditions and observances; and when the term politically correct is so politically charged.

So we have a perfect suggestion for you.

Your company received one or more awards in the 25th Anniversary International Gallery of Superb Printing earlier this year.

If you present your clients with a Duplicate International Gallery Award, they can scarcely object on grounds of business ethics or religious or other concerns. And importantly, it gives you a chance to remind your clients that you provide world class graphic artistry. Now they can have the award to prove it. And all of this marketing sizzle is so simple and easy for you -- you order it and we do the rest, shipping and handling included. For the bargain price of only $45 US per duplicate Award, you can solve a bit of holiday tension and get your marketing for the year 2000 begun on the right note.

With best wishes to YOU for a Happy Holiday Season.

That's All Folks!

Yours in Craftsmanship,

Kevin Keane IAPHC Minneapolis Minnesota
