By Kevin Keane, IAPHC CEO Communicator Coming The first issue of the IAPHC Communicator for fiscal 1999-2000 is on press and will soon be coming to a mailbox near you. Thanks to Norm Belanger for the prepress, Lesley Addy for the St. Louis Convention reporting, Frieda Sarubbi for obtaining the paper, and Walt Gutowski for the printing. New Websites There are several newly remodeled websites now online at the IAPHC's website CraftNet. You might take a peek at the Mid-Hudson Club's website recently re-tooled thanks to the hard work of Dave Albrecht; or the 11th District site thanks to Cindy Thomas' efforts; or the neat site for the Yosemite Area Club put together by James Shehan: www.iaphc.org/11th/yosemite_area/ Your Knowledge Network Obviously Works (Y'KNOW?) Y'KNOW Requests - From Roger Buck, member-at-large: "There is a local shop looking for a 36" Polar cutter. They would like to find one in the Midwest if possible. Does anyone out there have a used cutter? Please e-mail me at rogerbuck@terraworld.net Thanks!" - From Clint Davies of the Fraser Valley Club: "David McMaster (a former member of the Calgary Club, away from our industry for a stretch but now returning) has asked for my help to source a guideline for correct behaviour while working at a Graphic Arts trade show. Any suggestions please e-mail me at Clint.Davies@CAN.XEROX.com Thank you!" - From Steve Cox of the Des Moines Club: "We are looking for an experienced sales professional to fill the position of prepress specialist. Our firm is a 41 year old company serving the graphic arts industry in Iowa and Nebraska. We represent ABDick/Itek, ECRM, and Purup-Eskofot for Imagesetters and CTP devices. We are also a dealer for HP, Roland, Epson, Polaroid and Komori to name a few. We offer excellent benefits for a small company. This is a six figure income opportunity. Send your resume to Steve Cox, VP Marketing, Infomax Office Systems, PO BOX BC, Des Moines, Iowa, 50304-9907" - From Calvin Fong of the Silicon Valley Club: "I'm looking for a printer that can handle a directory - about 900 pages printed on a very light weight stock -- caliper of 0.0016 - similar to "bible paper." Quantity is 3000 to 4000 copies. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Please e-mail to CalvinF@ARTICO-SF.com Thanks." - From Jim Doremus of the North Jersey Club: "We are totally stumped. We have printed a job 32 up on a 48# 'Glama' (a translucent paper) which was then film laminated with matte polypropelene. The piece must now be trimmed and 'tabbed' in banks of 5's and 10's with reinforced Mylar tabs. Unfortunately, everyone we have contacted cannot get the Mylar to stay on the tabs. Is there anyone who has run into this problem, and if so where do we go to resolve it? I can be reached at jdoremus@epinc.com Thanks." This Y'KNOW REALLY WORKS Testimonials Now before we leave you gentle reader, we would like to share these two vignettes. 1) Last Friday afternoon, 12th District Governor Bill Leahy in Los Angeles was contacted by a friend in New York City looking for a printer. Bill asked us to send out an e-mail request. Within 15 minutes his friend called to say that Vince DiPalma of the New York Club had already contacted the potential contact! We keep repeating these three truths: Your Knowledge Network is awesome because: - it is global, not merely local - it is expertise specific - it is fast, REALLY FAST! 2) On Wednesday of last week, Fourteenth District Governor Dan Sand of Nahan Printing in St. Cloud, Minnesota asked for help on behalf of a customer who needed to find a printer able to print grocery shopping bags in 6 colors. We surmised that the project would be run flexo and thus gave Dan the name and contact info for our flexo expert Tim Trachtenberg of the Portland Club on the West Coast. We also knew of a firm that had entered the 25th Annual International Gallery this past June, Huntsman Packaging from Macedon, New York on the East Coast. We checked the entry manifest for Dan and were able to report that Huntsman had entered projects for Kroger, Safeway and Cub Foods, i.e., they could probably handle the job! Bingo, we had Knowledge Network liftoff, with expertise available coast-to-coast. We can never cease repeating the truth that supporting the International Gallery can be good for business. And the corollary truth that the Knowledge Network is global not merely local. That's All Folks! Yours in Craftsmanship, Kevin Keane IAPHC Minneapolis Minnesota |
