Club and IAPHC News
International Printing Week We encourage all our TMN readers to visit the IAPHC's website CraftNet to review the materials posted there to celebrate international Printing Week 2001 which will be celebrated January 13-21, 2001. We also remind all Clubs that if you require an additional quantity of the International Printing Week posters designed by Akron Club past president Walt Herip and printed by Heidelberg USA at the recent Graph Expo to show off the excellent coverage capabilities of one of their Speedmaster presses, please let us know and we will ship you some more copies. CraftNet is located at www.iaphc.org CraftNet News There are a number of new postings on CraftNet and we thank Rose Marie for her efforts as well as those of CraftNet Chair Don Landers and his committee for making these changes. If as you are surveying the site, you spot something that needs our attention, or could use an update, why not drop us a line and we can add it to the list. Just last week Sixth District Governor Pete Peterson who works for our International Gallery of Superb Printing Best Envelope Award sponsor Western States Envelope in Milwaukee, Wisconsin asked us to post a link to the Envelope Manufacturer's Association. CraftNet is your site, and it will benefit from our combined enthusiasm to see it become ever more useful. A note to all Club Bulletin editors, the December message from our Chairman Ray Rafalowski is available for downloading from CraftNet for use in your next issues. We also direct interested TMN readers to the new postings for the Mid-Year meeting in Orlando in 2001 and the Toronto Convention in August 2001. Note Bene: Thanks! We would like to pass along our sincere gratitude to Jim Duffy of Alonzo Printing Company in Hayward, California for the very generous donation of the printing of the most recent issue of the IAPHC Communicator. Between the excellent print job from Alonzo, (which bills itself as a provider of "Environmental Printing" for all you trend spotters out there) and the donation of the paper from International Gallery sponsor Tom Wright and Neenah Paper; not to mention some great digital photos and e-mailed filed stitched together in a very readable ensemble by Norm Belanger in Calgary -- well it's little wonder we have had so many nice compliments. Thank you to Jim and Tom and Norm and all our contributors. Next issue copy deadline is 11 December.

Platinum Reserve shows more Growth

The IAPHC Board of Governors would like to express its thanks to the Sierra Nevada Club for that Club's recent generous gift to the IAPHC's Platinum Reserve Fund. The Platinum Fund keeps growing thanks to the dedication of individual members, Clubs and Districts. And as for those fabulous folks in Reno- not only do you throw the world's greatest party, you are awfully nice too! Thank you, each and every one.

Sharing Knowledge from Montreal to Mid-Hudson

If you happen to be in Montreal on 12 December, you darn well better be at Quadriscan to participate in some cutting edge education on digital printing, direct image presses and large format printers as well. Michel Marin is the person to contact in the Montreal Club. The price is very reasonable, the company is outstanding, and the subject is here and now. Michel can be contacted via e-mail at documents.documents@bigfoot.com

Jeff Mayer of the Mid-Hudson Graphic Arts Association sent along an article from the 25 November Poughkeepsie Journal which contains a nice write-up about the Students at Meetings (S.A.M. Club) concept pioneered by IAPHC membership Chair Richard Jones and adopted now by several Clubs. Our hats are off to Richard in Los Angeles and Ray Lauria in Mid-Hudson for their respective hard word to enhance the awareness of students in and throughout our industry.

Y'KNOW Requests

Your Knowledge Network Obviously Works (Y'KNOW?)

Well the hits (successful connections in the Knowledge Network of Craftsmanship) just keep on coming.

Joe Benoit from Moore North America and the Capital District Club needed to find Braille printers recently. No problem. Joyce Fox of Pentagon Printing and the Pittsburgh Club needed to find a printer who could handle a 40" x 60" sheet. Would you know?

Thanks to the International Gallery and the power of Y'KNOW and the willingness of IAPHC members to reply almost instantly to an e-mail request dipping into that awesome arsenal of answers we call the Knowledge Network, Joyce got 11 different potential sources. Joe Benoit offered 3, Ray Rafalowski, Bob Schneider, Doug Hart, Don Haury, Dan Marantz and Mark Benkoski each offered a different nearby source. Even Doug Rawson from Superior Litho in Los Angeles and Scott McLeod of Pikes Peak Litho in Colorado took the time to reply. And how did we know that Superior or Pikes Peak might have large format capabilities? Because past 12th District Governor Bill Leahy had suggested that those firms should enter the International Gallery.....It all works together, gentle reader. Y'KNOW and Gallery and TMN can lead to new business and a new network connection for anyone who plugs in. Join us, won't you? The ice fishing is fine!

This weeks inquiries:

>From Frieda Sarubbi of Bradner Smith and the New Jersey and Greater Milwaukee Clubs: "I have customer asking for a product called 'Cartolith' which is supposed to be a static cling vinyl product used for decals. Has anyone heard of it, used it, etc? Thanks a lot!" Frieda can be reached via e-mail at frothbaum@bradnersmith.com

>From Danny Humphries in Richmond, Virginia. I am restoring a Multigraph #66 press. I think I have all the parts. I have one photo which shows the delivery end of the press. I desperately need a photo of the feeder end of the press. Any info will be greatly appreciated." You can reach Danny via e-mail at Ash N Lins Momy@aol.com

>From Bill Downs of International Gallery Best Book Award sponsor Worzalla and the Central Wisconsin Club: "We are currently experiencing some problems with our thread sealed books and are looking for some guidelines on testing the strength of the thread sealed books. If anyone has some suggestions on where to find this information or if you have testing criteria you would be willing to share please contact me." Bill can be reached at bdowns@worzalla.com

>From Howard Drayson, IAPHC Secretary-Treasurer and member of the Jacksonville Club: "I have a truly unusual request. A fellow I know who is with the local fire department is looking for diagrams of commonly used printing presses which can be used by emergency personnel in the event a person's hand or worse might need to be extricated from a press. If anyone could help this fellow, I would really appreciate it." You can contact Howard via e-mail at dbmman@aol.com

Membership Drive Is Coming to Town

Look for details about an all new IAPHC membership drive which will kick-off on January 1, 2001 and run through June 30, 2001. Several ways to win.

And once again, we repeat our solicitation -- if you are not an IAPHC member and are obtaining this issue of TMN on a virtual bounce, why not consider helping us deliver on our Mission by becoming an IAPHC member? If you say yes, we will even enter you in the aforementioned contest. Just e-mail this writer and we will see that you receive the tools to sign right up.

That is all Folks! -- 30 --

Yours in Craftsmanship,

Kevin Keane
