Drupa Video Tape

If any Club would like a simple yet educational program, why not contact IAPHC member Ed Kelly, long time graphics industry liaison for 3M Company and IAPHC International Craftsman of the Year in 1995? Ed put together a consortium of suppliers to the industry to underwrite this tape. It's a great way to feel like you had a sense of the innovation unveiled at the digital Drupa even if you were unable to attend. You can contact Ed at edkelly355@aol.com

Current Chairman's Message

Any Club bulletin editor who would like to obtain an e-mail file of the November message and accompanying photo from IAPHC Chairman Ray Rafalowski should e-mail this writer or Chairman Ray at rayraf@aol.com

CraftNet Update

The CraftNet Committee chaired by 11th District Governor Don Landers, and with the authorization of the IAPHC Board, has embarked upon a new relationship with a firm called AcmeNet based in Albany, New York. AcmeNet has been charged by the committee to update the present site and then to begin work on revamping the look and utility of the site. In this transitional time frame, Don Landers and his committee ask your indulgence as updates are posted pursuant to a priority list developed by Chairman Rafalowski. Things will progress as rapidly as possible. The CraftNet Committee and the IAPHC Board also would like to publicly salute long time webmaster Dan Millsip of Renaissance Web Creations in Vancouver who was the visionary who moved CraftNet forward. We applaud Dan's very professional contributions to the Association over the past several years and sincerely thank him for his efforts on behalf of the IAPHC.

Premier Craftsman Award

A new scoring sheet and order form is now available via e-mail or fax or mailed hard copy. The Premier Craftsman Award is the highest International distinction a Club can bestow on a member. Each award is a beautiful personalized certificate shipped already mounted on a plaque suitable for immediate hanging on any member's wall of honors. The award plaque also comes with a lapel pin to mark the individual member's contributions to Craftsmanship. The cost of the plaqued award certificate and pin is $40 US. If you would like to review the scoring sheet/award order form please e-mail Lesley Addy at laddy1069@aol.com and she will speed a copy to you.

International Craftsman of the Year

The process of nominating an IAPHC member to receive the highest honour bestowed by the IAPHC - The International Craftsman of the Year, begins with the nomination form. Any member can nominate any other member in good standing.

The IAPHC Board of Governors will decide the 2001 winner at the Mid-Winter meeting in February 2001. The winner will be announced at the 82nd annual Convention in Toronto on August 12, 2001. Frieda Rothbaum Sarubbi of the Greater Milwaukee Graphic Arts Association and the New Jersey Club was the richly deserving winner in 2000. If you would like to receive the nomination form, please contact Lesley Addy at laddy1069@aol.com The deadline for nominations is December 1, 2000.

Mid-Winter Meeting

The dates for the IAPHC Mid-Winter meeting are February 2 and 3, 2001 at the Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites at Universal Studios, Orlando, Florida. The hotel phone number is 407-351-3333. All IAPHC members are cordially invited to attend. The registration fee is $35 per person payable in advance. If you would like to attend please e-mail us or phone 800-466-4274 and we will send you a registration invoice. Room rates are $84 for deluxe rooms and suites start at $115 for a one bedroom. Each attendee is responsible for making their own room reservations with the Holiday Inn. We hope to see you there!

International Gallery Duplicate Awards

As local Clubs present their year 2000 International Gallery of Superb Printing Awards (a process that continues well into March 2001) the number of winning firms ordering duplicate awards continues to increase.

Why order a duplicate International Gallery award?

John Berthelsen, president of Suttle Press in Madison, Wisconsin has thus far ordered twenty duplicate year 2000 International Gallery awards for his clients and employees. John writes:

"It is the cheapest goodwill that can be provided to our clients, and is a bargain at twice the price!"

Duplicates are a great way to remind your existing customers that you perform world class work. When the low cost provider comes to call on them, the duplicate award hanging on your client's wall is a vibrant testament that quality still matters, and the rare combination of art and craft and science that made you a winner is worth any nominal extra cost.

Many firms have ordered duplicates for everyone in the production process. >From content creator thru completion at the finishing house; the people whose Craftsmanship combined to make you a winner, all deserve a pat on the back as well.

We would also remind you that duplicates can still be ordered from the years 1995-1999. If you need an order form, please just holler.

With the upcoming holiday season fast approaching, what better way to say thank you to your customers than a duplicate award that keeps your name front and center in their buying decision process?

A duplicate International Gallery Award is truly the ideal holiday gift.

Couple of Kudo's

We want to welcome Peter Herman, newest IAPHC member-at-large. Peter works for Sinapse in Paris, France. Peter's firm sells the simulation software modules that help train better press operators. If you want to drop him a note of welcome, his e-mail is peter.herman@sinapse.com You could also ask him to send you some information about his excellent product line.

If you are a non-member who is reading this issue of TMN on a virtual bounce, isn't it time you became an IAPHC member too? Peter saw the value of supporting the IAPHC in delivering on our mission. No matter where in the world you may be located, we hope you will follow his lead. Just e-mail Lesley Addy at laddy1069@aol.com and she will e-mail you an invoice to begin the ball rolling.

Last Tuesday saw a very well attended Club meeting in Phoenix, Arizona hosted by the inimitable Mr. Robert Gans, founder and guiding spirit of Gans Ink and Supply Company, a first time International Gallery of Superb Printing Sponsor in the year 2000. The meeting featured International Gallery award winner presentations, Bob Gans unique sense of humor, and even had a guest appearance by IAPHC Chairman Ray Rafalowski. The meeting was spearheaded by past 12th District Governor Bill Leahy and was a rousing success.

Friday evening last week saw Ray Rafalowski and International Gallery Co-Chair Dan Marantz attempting to "Walk like Egyptians" at the utterly fabulous and Egyptian themed GALA Gutenberg hosted by the Montreal Club. Our congratulations to Montreal Club president, Helene Blanchette and her team for putting together another awe inspiring evening honoring the International Gallery winners from all around the province of Quebec. Some 700 people attended this incredible soiree.

Y'KNOW Requests

Your Knowledge Network Obviously Works (Y'KNOW?)

Every single day, more and more members become "consumers of their Association" to use the memorable phrase of past IAPHC Chairman Larry Nelson.

Y'KNOW works for them because it is more than merely local, it is truly global; it is efficient in its specific expertise; and it is fast, incredibly fast.

Barry Rattigan of the Calgary Club expressed his thanks for a recent successful use of Y'KNOW in an e-mail of 21 October: ""A simple thing perhaps, but our Association gave me access to information from a user of the equipment, instead of a vendor. This 'simple thing' justified my membership dues for several years, and all the other benefits I receive by being a member of the IAPHC are a bonus! Thank you for your help once again!"

>From Mark Sharadin of the Capital District Club: "We are having quite the time with a pattern (yellow?) in our separations. Our front end is a Mac/Scitex with a Dolev 400 Imagesetter. We are using a 150 line screen ruling with composed dot structure. Standard angles of 45, 75, 105 and 90 (Yellow). (Meshs?) are the same on Cyan, Magenta and Black. Yellow is different. (I believe this to be a Scitex default thing.) Not much hair left. Anyone with similar equipment or experience please contact me at mark@the-pressroom.com

>From Dorian Mell of the Portland, Oregon Club: "We have a customer that is interested in custom printed tissue paper. They are a large national firm, so minimum's or dollars are not an issue. I'm hoping my fellow Craftsmen members can help me out with a source. Thanks." You can reach Dorian via e-mail at dorian@keylitho.com

>From Phil Hodgson of the Columbus, Ohio Club: "I am looking for a source for laser die cutting of 80# cover stock uncoated for holiday cards. Any suggestions?" You can contact Phil via e-mail at phodgson@the.dispatch.com

>From Dennis Gongwer of the Columbus Club: "I am having trouble finding an adhesive tape that is strong enough to hold on a pocketfolder with 3/4" reinforced edges. We printed on a duplex uncoated sheet and so far every tape we have tried pulls loose after a short time. Anyone have any sticky ideas?" You can contact Dennis at dgong0900@aol.com

>From Mid-Hudson Graphic Arts Association member Betti Verbert: "I am looking for a source for the foil lined material that is used to make sample packets for things like mustard, or ketchup or lotions and other potions. The material runs on a liquid pouch filling machine and needs to be 10-12" wide. Any leads would be tremendously helpful!" You can reach Betti via e-mail at equibal@aol.com or beboop1239@aol.com

>From Sandra Barnhart of the Omaha Club: "I, along with three other printers, have recently formed a peer group. We are looking for 3 to 4 other printers similar to us that are in non-competing areas of the country. We are all high-end sheet fed commercial printers in the $10 to $20 million sales range. We are looking for an owner that would come to 4 meetings a year. We meet for a day and half, generally one of those days are on a weekend. These meetings are at the Chicago show, and at members plants. Currently, our members are located in Omaha, the San Francisco area, Cleveland and the Virginia/North Carolina area. If anyone is interested please have them contact me." You can reach Sandra at sandy@barnhartpress.com
