Graphic Industry News with a Piquant Point of View

Club and IAPHC News

International Printing Week

Remember: The Holidays aren't over until you celebrate International Printing Week January 14-20, 2001. Please feel free to scope out our website CraftNet for an article about the history of this great event as well as a proclamation from Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien and if his lame duck staff ever gets around to it, President Clinton. (www.craftnet.org)

Membership Drive

The IAPHC kicked off a 6 month membership drive on January 1. Details are available from IAPHC Headquarters (e-mail Lesley Addy at laddy1069@aol.com) or from the opening page of CraftNet. Chris Kerlick of the St. Louis Club signed up his first member per the contest on January 1, 2001. Richard Jones of Los Angeles is listed as the sponsor of 3, count 'em, 3 new members submitted on 8 January.

The contest is worth something to you as a sponsor, to your Club and your District. But more important, is what it can mean to a new member. One use of Y'KNOW; one client order saved by a Gallery duplicate, one business building tidbit found in TMN, are all ways in which your fellow members say their dues are paid for many years in advance.

But you have to ask someone to join. They might be shy. Go on, ask 'em, you'll be glad you did!

International Gallery News

We are thrilled to be unveiling the 2001 International Gallery of Superb Printing Call for Entries (CFE), with a gorgeous design from Kathy Schoenick of the Madison Area Club and beautifully printed by Charles Tumminello's crew at Mark Lithography of the New Jersey Club. The 2001 CFE is now available, if you would like some copies sent your way, please e-mail the writer at kkeane1069@aol.com or Dan Marantz, International Gallery co-chair at dmarantz@aol.com

Also coming to a computer screen near you -- the Best of the Best celebration of the twenty sponsored award winners from the year 2000 International Gallery.

The section on CraftNet feting our sponsors and their respective named award winners is looking awesome. Keep checking the site! Rose Marie Havranek of AcmeNet has done us proud!

And there's more-- Jim Jacobson and the good folks at Lake County Press of the North Shore Club have taken a fabulous design featuring the photographic essays (and design) of Chris Grajczyk and are printing the colourful Best of the Best Brochure from the year 2000 International Gallery. The brochure (or should we say book) is a very impressive testament to the art and science and craft of all our entrants.

And, last but not least, please check out the superb multimedia website celebration of Impression Paragraph of the Montreal Club -- The firm won the Fuji Photo Film Best Digital Printing Award in the year 2000 International Gallery. We salute them for their success and thank Stanley Freimuth, Larry Warter, Diane Liakas, Tim Combs and the other fine folks at Fuji for their continued support of the ever growing International Gallery of Superb Printing. Y'KNOW Requests

Your Knowledge Network Obviously Works (Y'KNOW?)

In mid-December, Nancy Brock of Premier Press and the Portland Club needed to find a source for magastripping in the Chicago area. We posted her note to several savvy folks and within 24 hours she had a bunch of replies. In fact, Milt Vine of Seattle, Tony Sarubbi of Milwaukee and Steve Brocker of North Shore all suggested Frank Puisis of Finishing Plus in Chicago (Steve, there's a membership lead for you!) That's the power of Y'KNOW. Its reach is global, its expertise incredible, and it is fast, really, really fast!

From Bill Curcio of the New Jersey Club: "We are thinking about buying the Galileo platemaker from Agfa but would like to 'talk' to other users. If you can help, please e-mail me. Thanks." You can reach Bill at bc@linetone.com

From an anonymous member -- "I am thinking of investing in the ProForma franchise based in Cleveland, but would like to know more about the program. I have been in printing sales for many years and this looks appealing." If you can help this member please e-mail the writer at kkeane1069@aol.com and we will pass along your insights.

From Jeff Mayer of the Mid-Hudson Graphics Arts Association: "I need some help getting info on a binding system. One of our clients seems to remember a system called 'Fastback Binding' It is or was a binding system designed for high speed copying systems (Xerox etc). I'd like to know if it is still manufactured and by what company. Thanks for your help." You can reach Jeff via e-mail at jpmayer@aol.com or at ctprint@snet.net

From our newest member-at-large, Karen Darbinyan, Director of Asogik in Armenia: "I am interested in offset paper (60-120 g/m) from Canadian and European suppliers. If it is possible, please send me names addresses and e-mail addresses of companies that could supply such paper. Thanks in advance."
You can reach Karen Darbinyan via e-mail at print@netsys.am

From Mark Sharadin of The Pressroom and the Adirondack and Capital District Clubs in upstate New York: "We are having problems in the plate room and the press room. It is increasingly more difficult (over the last 24 months) to expose clean plates and to run these plates without pinholes. Plates in use are Enco, Kodak, Citiplate, Western and Fuji. All are extremely sensitive and none seem to perform better than the other. No one plate works well on all presses. I believe the plate technology must have changed. In the press room we used one vendors plates, from the same box, on 2 different four color presses. One press couldn't even roll up the plates for color. The other ran with stellar results. We are looking into the water, fountain solutions, calcium deposits, day of the week, quality of the air, pull of the moon .... Anyone having the same problems or who could suggest some solutions, contact me, please!" You can reach Mark at printmonger@yahoo.com

Scouts Merit Badge

Third District Deputy Governor and past president of the Buffalo Club, Linda Laney has requested your help with promotional assistance for a project she feels strongly about. As Chair of the Scout Merit Badge Committee for the IGAEA, Linda was sadly taken aback to learn that the Merit Badge for Graphics was in the lowest 10% of merit badges earned in 1999. Linda, a dedicated educator, asks all of us in the graphic arts profession, to encourage young people in Scouts not only to see the value in participating in the Scout Merit Badge program but especially to work toward a Graphic Arts Merit Badge. "It's important to expose the youngsters and plant the seed for future career development. I encourage all graphic arts teachers to serve as a Merit Badge counselor and to open your classrooms for an evening or a weekend for the scouts," said Linda.

For more info please contact Linda at llaney9684@aol.com or at her school phone extension, 800-836-7510 x 521.

Bowling Alone Redux

In a recent issue of TMN, we suggested that folks mull over the findings of the book titled 'Bowling Alone' as we seek ways to entice people to make time in their busy lives for various graphic arts events, including IAPHC Club meetings.

The December 11th issue of The New Yorker ran an article about design of workspaces that closed with this provocative observation: "From time to time, social critics have bemoaned the falling rates of community participation ...but they have made the same mistake. The reason Americans are content to bowl alone (or, for that matter, not bowl at all) is that, increasingly, they receive all the social support they need - all the serendipitous interactions that serve to make them happy and productive -- from nine to five."

Duplicate International Gallery awards are a proven way to retain valued printing clients. We can handle your orders for year 2000 International Gallery Award duplicates on virtually a same day basis. We also can provide duplicates from years prior to 2000. Jeff Mayer of Connecticut Printing and Graphics in Danbury CT just orderd his clients duplicates and timed a news release to all local media noting that in the decade of the 1990's, CPG won 88 awards in the International Gallery. Great marketing from Jeff, and there is no reason why all our winners can't emulate his strategy. If you need a copy of the Duplicate order form we will be happy to e-mail or fax you one and you will also find one in the issue of the IAPHC Communicator being mailed from Jacksonville.

That's all Folks! --30--

Yours in Craftsmanship,

Kevin Keane
