Graphic Industry News with a Piquant Point of View 7 March, 2001 Concern and Respect We trust you will join us in extending best wishes to our Seattle Club members. We hope that all of them have come through the recent earthquake experience unscathed in any permanently damaging manner. We also extend our condolences to the families of Shawn Morgan, Hamilton Club president, and Frank Soaib, immediate past St. Louis Club president, and Robert Root past president of the Utica District Club, all of whom passed away in the past month; and to Ward Wentzel, Charlotte Club president in the tragic loss of his son. Our respect for the memories of the departed, and our deepest sympathy to all the family members who mourn their loved ones taken too soon. It's International Gallery Season From an e-mail dated 3 March, from immediate past 2nd District Governor Jeff Mayer: "It's Gallery time again, and I thought you would all like to know that Heidelberg is again endorsing the International Gallery of Superb Printing with their sponsorship. It is obvious that Heidelberg recognizes the promotional value in attaching their name to the International Gallery and it is the promotional value that you and our fellow Second District members should recognize as one of the most important aspects of Gallery. The company I work for, Connecticut Printing & Graphics, sent out news releases to local newspapers, business journals and graphics trade magazines tooting our horn about the 17 International Gallery awards we have won. Six out of nine of the publications mailed to, printed a blurb about Connecticut Printing & Graphics. We promoted this to our current and prospective clients and it was well received. Clients like to print with a winner. To continue the promotion, five of our clients received duplicate International Gallery awards for their projects that we had entered. We purchased these duplicate awards from the IAPHC International Gallery headquarters in Minneapolis. Bottom line is that the International Gallery has got to be the least expensive and most productive form of self-promotion. As leaders of our organization we must promote the Big Promotion: The International Gallery of Superb Printing." The Call for Entries can be downloaded from the IAPHC's CraftNet website at: http://www.iaphc.org/gallery/cfe/ While there, we hope you will visit the awesome display of the Best of the Best winners from the year 2000 International Gallery as well. http://www.iaphc.org/gallery/bestof/2000/ The Call for Entries can also be obtained by e-mailing this writer, or by phoning IAPHC Headquarters at 800/466/4274. Judges Needed (and you will be enraptured) "Just a note to thank you and the IAPHC staff for your hospitality while I was out there judging. When Dan Marantz first asked me to judge, he told me it would be an enlightening experience. How right he was! We are so often caught up in our own little specialty world of printing that we really don't get the time to critically look at other facets of the printing industry. The opportunity to see so many excellent pieces of various types of printing certainly stimulates the mind to broaden one's scope of how we look at our own specialty and to see what can be incorporated into it from other disciplines. Thank you all for this great chance to be enlightened. It was enjoyable and rewarding." From an August 2, 2000 letter from Bob Biava, New Jersey Club member, and president of Driscoll Label Co, Inc., in Fairfield, New Jersey. Isn't it time you experienced what Bob extolls? Drop us a note, and we will extend a formal invitation with all the particulars. PSST: It's EASY! Dan Marantz, International Gallery Chair, has cooked up a fun little promotion that runs until 31 March 2001. If you provide 4 names of firms who have not previously entered the International Gallery, Dan will enter your name in a drawing (held during the Gallery judging) for a digital camera valued at $500. The firms may or may not actually enter. Dan just wants the contact names. The printers can be located anywhere in the world. The form for providing the 4 names can be obtained via e-mail by contacting the writer or Dan himself at dmarantz@aol.com Dave Simas, Cynthia Petermann, Frieda Sarubbi and Pete Peterson are among those whose names will be entered multiple times in the contest because they have filled out multiple sheets of four contacts each. Why not join them? There's no limit on the number of contact sheets you provide. And Dan says THANK YOU! Look For: The closing date for the next issue of the IAPHC Communicator was 5 March. When this issue goes to press at Universal Press in Niles, IL., it will include registration information for the 82nd annual IAPHC Convention to be held in Toronto, Ontario August 10-12, 2001, as well as a copy of the International Gallery Call for Entries. Members wishing to register for the Toronto Convention can download a registration form from the IAPHC website as well. Procurement Corner The persistent one, IAPHC Procurement Chair Frieda Sarubbi, is looking for some volunteers to assist her with some simple 2 color printing needs for the association. If you could assist, she can be reached at 847/290/8485.
