Sandy Alexander Inc. Sets Aggressive Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Goal
[Clifton, NJ March 22, 2006] Sandy Alexander
Inc., a national leader in environmentally responsible graphic
communications solutions, has pledged to further reduce its
total U.S. greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 11% per dollar of
revenue from 2006 to 2012. The company committed to the
reduction goal as part of the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency’s (EPA’s) Climate Leaders program, which Sandy Alexander
joined in 2006. This pledge is the latest step in Sandy
Alexander’s ongoing commitment to reduce its dependence on
fossil fuels and the resulting greenhouse gas emissions.
Sandy Alexander initiated its greenhouse-gas
reduction effort in 2005, and in 2006 announced a seven-year
commitment to use 100% wind power for all of the company’s
electrical needs and a capital investment to reduce natural-gas
usage. When combined with the new Climate Leaders goal, Sandy
Alexander is committing to reducing its total GHG emissions by
85% per dollar of revenue from 2006 to 2012.
“Sandy Alexander continues to lead the commercial printing
industry by example by reducing our environmental footprint and
demonstrating that environmental responsibility is a sound
business practice,” said Roy Grossman, Sandy Alexander President
and CEO. “We are pleased to participate in the Climate Leaders
program because it provides us the means to measure our progress
towards a defined goal, and also provides a framework for total
transparency about what we are working to accomplish,” added
Grossman. Launched in 2002, Climate Leaders is an
industry-government partnership that works with companies to
develop long-term comprehensive climate change strategies.
Partners set a corporate-wide greenhouse gas reduction goal and
inventory their emissions to measure progress. By reporting
inventory data to the EPA, Partners create a lasting record of
their accomplishments.
As an ISO 14001-certified company, Sandy
Alexander has put a formal environmental management system in
place to focus efforts on reducing waste generation and
preventing pollution of all types. Each year, Sandy Alexander
establishes corporate objectives in the areas of clean energy
use, reduction of energy use, recycling, and overall reduction
of waste and material directed to landfills. In addition, the
company takes other steps in its printing process to reduce its
environmental footprint. These include the use of
environmentally friendly inks and the use of recycled and FSC-certified
paper. (The Forest Stewardship Council [FSC] is an international
non-profit organization that sets standards for the responsible
management of the world’s working forests. The FSC certification
logo on printed matter certifies that that the paper used
originates from wood legally harvested in responsibly managed
forests, and does not contain wood harvested in areas of high
conservation values.) “Our Climate Leaders
partners are demonstrating corporate climate change leadership
by embracing energy efficiency, green power, and technological
innovation as sound business investments,” said EPA Deputy
Administrator Marcus Peacock. “Many of the nation’s leading
companies are working aggressively with EPA to lower their
greenhouse gas emissions. Sandy Alexander is
active in a number of other environmental stewardship programs
in addition to the Climate Leaders program. Among these are the
EPA’s Green Power Partnership, which recognized Sandy Alexander
as the largest purchaser of renewable energy in the printing and
publishing sector. Sandy Alexander has also been recognized by
the state of New Jersey as New Jersey’s Clean Power Purchaser of
the Year for 2006. For more information about
