IAPHC Announces the International Craftsman of the Year 1997
Michael H. Stinnet

Mike is currently the instructor of Printing Technology at the Oakland Technical Center Southeast Campus located in Royal Oak, Michigan.

Mike is a member of the Detroit Club of Printing House Craftsmen where he served as President in 1980. He has held many offices in the Detroit Club and has served as their Industry/Education Chair in 1978; 1983-87; and began as that chair again in 1990 and is still serving. When Mike was Bulletin Editor in 1982-83 the Detroit Club Bulletin won the International Best of Show Bulletin Award. Six of the ten issues were printed by his students.

Mike enjoyed his duties as Industry/Education Chair for the Club so much that he has served in that capacity since 1980 and held the position six times on the International Level.

Mike has also been the Chair of the Annual Gutenberg Awards since 1985. The Gutenberg Awards are cosponsored by the IAPHC and the IGAEA. This program took three years for Mike to develop and entries are received from all over the US, Canada and Europe.

While Mike has been actively involved in Craftsmanship for the last couple of decades, he has also been very actively involved in other areas of the industry at the same time.

Mike opened the graphic arts program where he teaches in 1972. He has grown his department from 2,400 square feet to 7,000 square feet and is the only instructor. Mike's former students can be found world wide from the US and Canada to Germany and South Africa.

Just a few of the other graphic arts association where Mike has served include: GATF; Printing Industries of Michigan; National Graphic Arts Literacy Program; Michigan VICA and the National Education Council of the Graphic Arts.

Mike has received numerous awards. Some of them include the Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award in 1993; The Fred J. Hartman Award in 1996; The Fifth District Craftsman of the Year award in 1990; the Ben Franklin Award in 1989 from the Detroit Area Graphic Arts Association; the Van Hanswyk-Jasser Outstanding Achievement Award in 1981; and five Presidential Citations from Past International Presidents of the IAPHC.
